Is it remastered from original tapes, or cleaned up or something?

Rhino does a good job. But my original is very nice.

I wonder if the original tapes are still available for this. MFSL has done a bunch of their albums but not this one for some reason.

I have an early U.S. with Obi (Los Lobos - How Will The Wolf Survive? ), an original U.K. and a Japanese first pressing. Yes, it is a wonderful album and I love it every time I play it! I won't pick this issue up, unless the experts here say that it sounds better than the original or out of this world. It's great though that the album is being reissued by Rhino. It merits a place in every collection.

Best U.S. album of 1984. What a debut! (Not counting the earlier stuff, no).

No. My copy has vertical Red Obi with white writing just like the copy shown on the discogs link that I posted. I bought it at PDQ in Tucson, AZ in 1999. I spent hours in that store/warehouse in May 1999!

Wishful thinking? In my experience Rhino have done everything between great and pretty average of late. I wouldn't rule out it being an improvement if we knew the source and the cutting engineer.

I have a lot of faith in Rhino these days. My experiences have been really great the past few years.

I think it's great the folks get another chance at the LP, but I'm totally in love with my Slash '84 US copy. Sounds awesome.

Would love to see Rhino release Kiko. I don't care what is said about the Mobile Fidelity version, I just hate half-speed mastering.

Im the first to be the negative norman when it comes to a reissue outdoing the original. But, here is hoping.

    What Id hope to transpire:

"Wow, this is a surprise. More detail and yet it has the presence and warmth of the original!"

    What will most likely happen:

"Certainly has more detail and separation, but something is missing. Sounds a bit sterile"

Just listened today. It’s all there...great bass, nice mids and highs.

    All good!

Except I see no mention of half speed mastering on recent MFSL titles.

I have the original vinyl and I wasn't blown away. I guess it depends what Rhino uses to master this lp, and who is mastering it. I'll give the new one a try. Rhino has done some good stuff.

This forum is so great for music recommendations. From this thread, bought the original on discogs. I enjoy Kiko and have the new one as well. So much great stuff out there!
