Steve said that on his releases the CD and LP are tonally the same on his equipment. He said that the LP has "the breath of life" edge of the CD. I am paraphrasing.

I'm not interested in those sorts of reasons...in *this* poll.

They will make for other interesting polls, though.

I simply want to get a sense of the proportion of folks who think one medium tends to *sound better* than the other.

Which means you *generally prefer* the sound of LPs.
    Your vote would be "LP".

    HTH.

If you don't think either medium tends to sound better than the other on average, then you would vote 'neither'.

I'm with you, Alex. Many of the SACDs I own are superb. When/if some of my favorites come out on SACD, I'll dump the vinyl on ebay and pocket the difference. Here's one that's possibly going to make the cut, I'm hoping I'll know in a few weeks:

And neither were reel-to-reel or 45s or 78s.

    This was intentional.

In fact that's one thing I'd need to know to evaluate the results --
how many regular contributors are there?

Scott, if you don't believe that Steve's CD's have "the breath of life" might I suggest giving Nat's Greatest Hits or Elvis 24KT a listen. Don't get me wrong, as I've never heard them on vinyl before, but with these 2 it seems to be "the definative versions" and personally I don't see how the vinyl could be that much different/better.

Then so was the calim that this board is dominated by CDphiles.

Which is what sparked this poll.

WHo made that claim in the first place, I wonder?

The poll should still be open (I set the time to 'zero'). I don't consider the current results 'final'.

Amusing that people are *crapping* on it already.
    Though perhaps it was inevitable.

Then your vote would be 'LP'.

    Hope That Helps.

    SHEESH.

    Those folks can vote 'neither'.

So much for the 'Rube Goldberg' aspect of the poll!

("Rube Goldberg" implies high but pointless complexity. I can't say
I really get the reference in this case.)

It probably would have saved a lot of headache if you'd spelled out the limits of your thread/poll in your first post. You could have ask that only comments that strickly pertain to the poll be left and that all you wanted was the stats.

    Just trying to help...

Well, KA, if we go with the "preponderance of evidence" instead of case-by-case, then I'm OK as I voted. BUT you'll note that in responding to MagicAlex's post about SACD, I have no bias against digital, only the fact that, in many of my own experiences (and for whatever reason), PCM just doesn't seem to satisfy as much. Check out the reviewer comments in an article discussing the first five Analog Productions Fantasy reissue SACDs in this month's edition of The Sensible Sound magazine (beginning on page 72).

Michael: if the industry has its way the CD might be supplanted by something else. Better start hoarding those CDs now before they make you buy either an SACD or DVD-A player.

My 4,000+ CDs are going nowhere. Of course, there will be a next level! I believe it will be chip related-no moving parts. Survival of the fittest. I'm happy with my collection, I can always add to it and do quite often. I'm a happy camper indeed!:)

WOW! This is one of the greatest Concords ever made! Where did you hear that it might come out on SACD? Bill watrous plays an outstanding cadenza on Shortcake,KILLER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I think ilike this one better than "For Duke".

I'm not at liberty to say at this time, Ron. One of the principals involved in the decision making process is waiting for my copy of the LP to arrive in his office.

Phil Edwards made the Concord sound what it once was throughout the 70's and 80's, and some of his recordings approach state of the art (on LP, the CDs sound pretty variable). IMHO, you are right about this one compared to that phony-sounding, tizzed-upper midrange, over-priced audiophile collectable, For Duke, not only for the sound quality, but for the music as performed too. Trust me, I have been lobbying hard for this one...

Scott wrote that the LP had an edge over the CD with respect to "the breath of life". This implies that both have "the breath of life". He never said that the CDs did not have this very important quality.

    Your last sentence is speculation.

There are more than 1200 members at this point, although I get the feeling that the majority don't bother to "contribute."

Maybe because there are a lot of childish talk here?
If I think LP sound more like music than CD, I get some strange reactions
from people that think otherwise. Lighten up, CD has won the battle.
CD sells a lot more than LP!!
So your side has won. Because it must be so that the thing most people buy is better?? Of course Britney Spears is better than Bob Dylan because her latest sold more! ;)

I think a lot of people stay away from these threads, for good reason ;)

I should have made it clear that's where I thought the bias might come in.

Many people sign up and only contribute once or twice and then they are gone.

He gets LP and CD to sound similar TONALLY, as in T O N A L L Y.

Since you haven't A/B'd a particular title on both formats on state of the art equipment, you are merely speculating.

Why would it necessarily need to be played back on "state-of-the-art" equipment?
