She's too old for this. I don't mean in the sense that she shouldn't necessarily try music in this style, or work with these people. I mean IT'S NOT WORKING. I've heard a few people (not here) who try to sell it up as this empowering thing, for a woman her age to be doing this. Well, *trying* it maybe, but...

The first time I watched this, it was without the sound (at a friend's recommendation,) and watching her just made me cringe. Mom, please don't do that :(

Bowie did the album Earthling when he was 50. The video for Little Wonder was obviously trying to fit in with newer stuff, and there is a whiff of "David, you're not *quite* young enough to pull that off," but just a bit. After that, he did Hours..., openly acknowledged his age, and went off in a more appropriate direction.

Madonna is six years older than that now, she's trying much, much harder than Bowie did, and I can barely watch. A woman her age can still be sexy, but that doesn't mean she's succeeding. It's like watching AC/DC write new songs about getting laid. It's creepy.

I'd agree with all this. She's worked so hard to make Rebel Heart' current and relevant. There's no way she'd just shrug off it's failure. Even though she's had immense success, she still wants to be at the top.

You have a point but she should get the hint that by now that she won't be seeing any chart success anytime soon. She should be more focused on making more natural and mature music that actually appeals to her core fanbase.

Yeah, and "Bitch I'm Madonna" especially: she wanted this to be the hit. You can see the idea of the song and then the video was to sound and look 'relevant' and to have a hit (on the charts and on YouTube). I'm sure the plan was that the video would come out, we'd all love it and it would seen as a celebration of Madonna the icon. I don't think it's that bad (in fact, I sort of like it) but I would have predicted it wouldn't be a hit. But, it has had 31 million YouTube views. "Living For Love" is on about 16 million and "Ghosttown" 13 million, so it has had more attention, which is what Madonna wanted (the problem is that I don't think a lot of the 31 million viewers actually like the video). :(

And almost none of the 31 million bought the single...

I just think she somehow believes that everything that happened in 1983-90 can happen again. At some point radio said 'enough', and that's hard to beat. She should be grateful she had the career she did instead of trying to make it happen all over again.

She needs to write with Patrick Leonard again and do some more organic music. Ghost Town is a glimpse of what she can do. Rebel Heart is good but I think it's all over place with no focus and she is trying to be everything to everyone.

She could have managed to reform The Beatles and had them in the video and it wouldn't have saved her.

Combination of ageism (in this case for younger artists) and misogyny. Not that this is anything new - their fathers probably did the same thing when it came to the artists their kids loved way back when. They're just keeping the flame alive.....

That thought did not occur to me, but I hope you are right. If not, she has seriously lost it.

When she starts making less than 100 million a tour is when she'll start to worry. Otherwise, she's cruising to a nice retirement, I would say.

I agree but her thing is about relevance. It always has been. She's never gonna go out and bring the public the "Greatest Hits" tour. She's always tried to be vital and new. She wants to be trendy, vital, and cutting edge.

2004's "Reinvention" tour might be the closest she comes. While the 2001 "Drowned World" tour sold really well, I think it's almost complete lack of pre-1994 songs turned off a LOT of concert-goers. Combine that with the semi-flop status of 2003's "American Life" - the album behind which she was nominally touring in 2004 - and I think she felt she needed to cater to the more casual fans in 2004.

I'll be interested to see set lists for the 2015 tour. I assume they'll be similar to the last few - roughly half new songs and half older tracks - but it's possible that trend could change. Seems unlikely, though...
