Goodbye Maggie. Will miss your unique voice, the unearthly low voice in harmony with your sisters. Will miss your soaring beautiful songs and your oddball quirky songs as well.

  16. Never got chance to see The Roches (nor the McGarrigles) but always loved their voices/harmonising/arrangements.

    Such sad news:

Do your eyes have an answer
    to this song of mine
    They say we meet again
    on down the line
Where is on down the line
    how far away?
    Tell me I'm okay

    (The Hammond Song)

My condolences to family & friends.

    Best Wishes,
    David

I am heartbroken. Saw the ladies several times over the years, and I treasure all of their recordings. What a sweet spirit she was.

  18. In my mind, the Roches will always be connected with their sisters in 'crime', the McGarrigles (even though there weren't a lot of stylistic similarities), since they each arrived on the scene about the same time, and each offered a wholly original, uniquely female-centered vision with their music. Right now, I feel the same sense of deep sadness and loss as when Kate McGarrigle passed a little while back. Condolences to sisters Terre and Suzzy, as well as other family members.

I was fortunate enough to see the group three times - the first time when they were bizarrely booked as the opening act for Boz Scaggs at the Universal Amphitheatre in 1979 just after their first trio LP was released (they bravely stood their ground as they were jeered by all the Boz fans in the house), in the late 80's at the Beverly Theatre, and then again in July of 1992 at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco, where by this time they were received as the national treasure they were.

Very sad. Although I've loved them as a group since first hearing the first record just after it's release in '79, Maggie was my favorite songwriter among them. Such a sharp and wonderfully strange point of view lyrically and musically.

The Roches first album is such a classic, and Maggie shined with her songs "Hammond Song" and "Quitting Time," we are blessed that she and her sisters shared themselves and their music with us. Very sad day for me. RIP Maggie.
If there's another world, she'll be there.

I'm really sad to see this. She was fine songwriter and a real all-around musical talent. I saw the Roches a few years ago. It was a great show, and. they came out and said hello to the fans afterwards. I got to talk to Maggie - she was really nice and friendly and also struck me as very intelligent.

Sorry to hear this - she was very nice, the little I knew of her - we went to the same songwriters group in NYC.

Actually, she gave me a nice compliment on a song brought one night. I was pretty psyched to have someone like her say, "hey, that was a really good one."
