Even Macrovision has copy protection schemes being used.

"For example, content owners can limit the number of times a user can play the content on a PC"
    GRrrrrrrrrr!!!

What next, books that you can only read if you're sitting in your own easy chair?

Companies will keep on trying to sell the music industry on copy protection and consumers will always be a step ahead of them. Its a losing proposition. Most MP3 listeners don't care about perfect quality. Even if they could eliminate digital copies, there will never be any way to stop someone from making an analog out to mp3 copy of anything. And that will sound fine to 90 percent of those who listen to mp3's. Its about portability, not quality.

I'm not to sure about those mp3 listeners. I would bet that most of them also would consider recorded hiss to be unacceptable. Adding analog into their copy steam may add enough hiss to get them concerned.

Maybe degradable media such as VHS. Maybe a ban on the reselling of recordings and books. With enough members of congress in the fold...

Books have already a note indicating that they cannot be resold.

Seems difficult to enforce but would be easy in places such as ebay.

They will never stop trying. They'll always be someone waiting to crack the code. An endless battle.:)

Macs and Linux machines might be more open.

    It will be cracked eventually.

Might be simply a Microsoft siren song to lure copyright holders into who knows what scheme that will eventually benefit Microsoft only.

Microsoft's Corporate Vision: A slice of every pie, no matter how dirty. And if it gets too dirty, we'll charge for the cleanup.

Oh great! Now we'll have to go online and download a patch update every few weeks just to listen to music! :D :D :D

If the record industry proceeds with their plans to prevent people from doing what they want with their legally purchased CDs, they may find themselves declaring bankruptcy!

It's funny sometimes... people on the MP3 newsgroups requesting remastered versions only... even DCC McCartney!

We don't have to accept this... I may be grabbing an iMac and an iPod and putting these MS machines behind me. Not to start an OS debate, but I've been using Mac's OSX at work for a year now, and I find it to be intuitive, visually pleasing, stable, and in many cases, faster.

You'd be doing yourself a favor - not to mention at least partially getting away from the greed of Micro$oft.

Yes, to me it seems just that Microsoft is trying to "standardize" the copy protection schemes and make it part of the Windows. Macs and Linux wouldn't be affected. And I think that it won't take more than a week before there is a registry hack available for Windows to go around the protection.

Apple has been in a bad position because Motorola, maker of the G4 chip, has cut back on R&D and therefore leaving the Mac G4 at the 1.5GHz mark. However, they're starting to work with IBM on a new chip.

What I'm looking forward to is the possibility of Mac OSX on a PC computer (code-named "Marklar"). In a recent Mac Rumors article, it was mentioned that this would happen when Microsoft and Intel started limiting our rights.

The whole article is at http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2002/11/20021124221123.shtml

Mac OS Rumours is rarely correct in their 'information', they are not a trustworthy Mac news site and I really wouldn't put much stock in what they have to 'report'.

That whole scenario sounds a bit ridiculous to me anyhow.

Actually, Mac Rumors is one of the better Rumor sites. Far better than Mac Slash, Think Secret, etc. They're pretty conservative.

Talk of OSX on x86 machines has increased to a fever pitch, so it wouldn't surprise me at all. In fact, it doesn't sound ridiculous to me. Apple needs to have this option, considering their market share is still shrinking. They probably won't go there, but it would be great if they did! :)

Frankly, I don't think the record industry cares what you do with it so long as you buy it and keep it to your self. The problem comes in the distribution of the material to others that don't buy it.

Damn the music industry for trying to protect their interest. Damn Microsoft and other software companies for trying to sell a product to record companies to help them protect that same interest. Damn the artists for wanting to get paid for their efforts. Hold on, lets take this a step further. Damn Steve for not posting mp3's and wma's for us cheap bastards to download. How ungrateful could he be? We've given him four million hits to his website. He owes us. Wait let's go a step further. Perhaps we need a government program that employs artists to create music. Getting the music becomes an entitlement because it is our right as American's to get free music, just as the Roman's gave free entertainment in the coliseums across the Roman empire. Steve then becomes a government employee as a mastering engineer.

Some of you amaze me that you scoff at the idea of not being able to download and burn your own music.

Damm the Music Industry for listing a single Cee Dee for $19.99
Damm Microsoft for creating a MONOPOLY....
Thank Goodness for the HUMAN MIND and SPIRIT!
    Why are you amazed?
Cheap bastard? I own nearly 5,000 Cee Dee's that I PURCHASED with my HARD EARNED money.
Damm the Music Industry for RIPPING ME off with the constant baiting of a better remaster with that one song they left off so I will rebuy again and again and again...Now they are baiting us with SACD...DVD-A..What's next Brain implants?
Then they can FINALLY CONTROL US COMPLETELY...
Trust me, if they could they would. We are all consumer cattle to them, a buck for their next Rolls or Mansion.
One BAND did it right! THE DEAD! That's why they were loved so much for so long...

    You got it right, Mike.
If these greedy SOB's want to copy-protect and hassle their paying customers, let 'em do it - and I won't buy 'em. But at least the packaging should let the customer know.

Got one CD from a small label distributed by Sony which would not play on a computer drive. Packaging didn't warn the customer. Underhanded, IMO.

This is sooooo true, same case here, I was just ripped off last week when I bought a Rush remaster that shows no improvement over the one I had for 15 years.
