Not quite the same thing but in the original "Battlestar Galactica" Jane Seymour got killed off early. I remember thinking showing death happens to main characters could make this show superior to "Star Trek TOS". What I didn't realize was Seymour was originally contracted just for the 3 hour pilot movie. It was because the audience reaction was so favorable that she agreed to do a couple more episodes.

From the anime series Bleach. This is an honorable mention but it is still one of the most shocking moments (I had to rewatch it a few times to believe what I had seen):

I consider it an honorable mention since Momo didn't die (she was able to receive medical treatment in time to save her life).

  5. George's fiancé on "Seinfeld". I just would never expected it.

  6. While it was because Denise Crosby was going to leave STTNG, I thought the death of her character was a surprise at the time. Not a particularly great episode (which was disappointing given that it was written by one of my idols Joseph Stefano).

Quite possibly one of the most mean-spirited moments ever in television history - Left such a bad taste in my mouth that I could never really look at the show in the same light again after that.

My wife and I have the entire series on DVD and we let my grandma borrow it last winter so she had something to watch. Back when Dallas was first on it was my grandparents show, they never missed it. But she had forgotten about this scene, and when it came up she said she was so mad she needed to take a break from watching because she felt cheated ... almost 30 years later!!!!

Just finished watching the series..I saw this post by accident so I knew it was coming but it was so anti-climatic. Not nearly as well crafted as Stringer Bell's demise.

Even though Dr. Greene's death had been foreshadowed, it was still a very upsetting/shocking moment. In a way it ruined the show for me because I could never watch the reruns without being reminded that his life was going to be cut short.

If you're short of time skip to the 24:00 mark.

This made my blood run cold as a kid.

Jack Ruby shooting Lee Harvey Oswald must have been shocking, and possibly upsetting, at the time. It was, I believe, the first known murder to be broadcast live on television.

Heartbreaking, certainly, but mean-spirited? Nah. It was a very sad, beautiful, moving scene.

Absolutely. I didn't have to watch the episode just now to remember Archie "they blew him up in his car". What made this one of the best TV series of all time. Perfect mix of humor, irony and pathos.

Last good season of Dexter. I don't think anyone watching that show expected Rita to be in that bathtub.

I don't watch much TV anymore, but when I did, the guy from Hill Street Blues, Mr. Hooper and Grandpa Walton. Because the actors died in real life.
