To me, both shows were entertaining but different. With "The Munsters" you could have taken many of their stories and with a little modification they would have fit into a sitcom like "Leave It To Beaver" or "The Brady Bunch" (hmmmm, a combination of "The Munsters" and "The Brady Bunch"... "here's the story...of a monstrous family...").

I agree with the other posters about "The Addams Family" being an edgier show. The characters had a definite glee about being so different from the norm. Being on TV in the 1960s they had to tone some of the aspects of the characters.

Some have mentioned both Fred Gwynne and John Astin as great on their respective shows. Comparing the two, I give Fred Gwynne the edge. When you compare the subsequent actors who have played the roles, I think Raul Julia in The Addams Family movies equals, if not exceeds, John Astin as Gomez. He displays a truly twisted glee in the role. The look on his face when Morticia speaks French...

They were both "Black & White"? Munsters was more of a "one note" show, but it was a good note.

P.S. What's the deal with a different Marilyn being in the 1966 Munsters movie, Munsters, "Go Home!"?

I know, it's weird to seeing the gang including TV Marilyn in color.

I wonder if the show was broadcast in color if it would have made a difference? I think it was perfect in B&W....too bad we didn't have the second season in color though.

Could have been an effective first hybrid. Scenes inside the house in black&white, everywhere else in color! Really would have brought home the fact that when you went into their house you were entering a different world, and entering an old horror movie in a way. I guarantee the series would be syndicated more today and would be seen in a different light, literally and figuratively.

that's an interesting take! I agree if it had been broadcast in color it would be even more popular today...but, it did pretty well these past 50 years...still on TV somewhere in the world today!

Like the Beatles and Stones, loved them both for their different take on classic monster fun. Any word if these shows will ever get a blu-ray release?

wish the AF DVDs weren't flippers! The 2 separate seasons of the Munsters were as well, but they changed that with the complete box set!

The Addams Family were the Beatles, the Munsters were the Monkees.
