I have some Stones hybrids, Dark Side of The Moon, the AF John Lee Hooker & Zombies discs and the DVD-A of N. Youngs Harvest. What discs would you folks recommend as "Must haves"? Jazz, blues or rock, it doesn't matter. Joe
To name a few: SACD All of the Audio Fidelitys All of the MFSL Patricia Barbers. Issac Hayes - Hot Buttered Soul (MoFi) Thelonious Monk - Straight, No Chaser (Columbia/Legacy) Mingus Ah Um (Columbia/Legacy) Ryan Adams - Gold (Uni) Miles - Sketches Of Spain (Columbia/Legacy) Jorma Kaukonen - Blue Country Heart (Columbia) Steely Dan - Gaucho (Uni) Any of the Krauss Rounders DVD-A Doobie Bros - The Captain & Me Steely Dan - Everything Must Go Eagles - Hotel California
DVD-A Queen - The Game Donald Fagen - Kamakiriad Donald Fagen - The Nightfly Steely Dan - Everything Must Go Steely Dan - Two Against Nature Fleetwood Mac - Rumours (older DVD-A, but I like the mch mix and it has yet to get the remastered CD treatment, which will supposedly happen soon) SACD Billy Joel - The Stranger Billy Joel - 52nd Street Yellowjackets - Time Squared Bob Mintzer Big Band - Gently Steely Dan - Gaucho Beck - Sea Change Miles Davis - Kind Of Blue Miles Davis Quintet - Steamin' Jaco Pastorius Big Band - Word of Mouth Revisited Dave Brubeck - Time OUt Police - Every Breath You Take The Singles
I've heard that the Ryan Adams disc wasn't all that impressive... what would the motivation to upgrade from redbook CD be?
In addition to those mentioned: Ellington - Blues in Orbit Sonny Rollins - Saxaphone Colossus and Way Out West Dave Alvin- Blackjack David Ray Brown - Soular Energy Chet Baker - Chet Sam Cooke - Portrait Richie Valens N. Merchant- Tigerlilly
Ryan Adams GOLD might not be the most agressive multi-channel mix out there, but it is a definite improvement over the redbook. For me, it's a prime example of how sometimes the subtler approach to a mix is better.
Let me add Dylan's Slow Train Coming as a must have SACD, especially the 5.1 mix! And for fun, you have to get the Frank Zappa Halloween DVD-A....great tunes, great sound, and an insane drum solo!
Beck's "Sea Change" SACD is a must. Peter Gabriel "III" another I also highly rate Dylan ("Blonde on Blonde" - Anesini remix, "Blood on the Tracks", the Stones "Beggars" and "Bleed" and Pink Floyd's "DSOTM" - all on SACD.
I don't have any SACD experience, but as far as DVD-A goes, I would say apart from the obvious Grateful Dead discs (in my opinion, which probably not shared), is Glen Phillips' Abulum. Complete with a 1 1/2 hour acoustic concert and also an interview. Shows what is possible with DVD-A.
