The picture was taken circa 1978 if I'm not mistaken.

I bet lifting Orson Welles in 1978 would be a problem...:D I'd say this guy made some classic european 70-80's films and is still alive.

It looks like Herzog but if this is in Moscow, maybe Tarkovsky? (No offense to Herzog, but Tarkovsky is even more impressive.)

Yep that's Herzog. Shot somewhere in US I think, maybe some film festival. More recognizable pic of them together

Well, I'd say Tarkovsky and Herzog are a bit apples and oranges, I wouldn't compare the two. Tarkovsky was another great friend and there is one great picture of them together.

She should let him up; the stripes on his shirt are settling to the bottom!

So is there a story to go along with this great photo?

Is that your mom, too? I guess she was an actress?

Yes, that's her. She was a film director, one of the greats of soviet cinema. She died in a car crash in 1979 along with 5 other members of her crew. Two of her most classic films Wings and The Ascent (her greatest work and winner of 1977 Berlin Film Festival) are available on Criterion Collection

I just found this photo today, don't know any story behind it, sadly other than they were great friends and fans of each other's work and Werner wrote a great piece about my mom in a book dedicated to her memory after her death.

Yes, it's a great film, though extremely tragic, one of the best WW2 films ever according to many many film critics and a frequent in Best Movies of All Time Lists. Her beauty was legendary too, Lisa Minelli who was a close friend said that she was the most beautiful woman in Europe. I'm lucky to be the son of not only one, but two of great film makers. My father is Elem Klimov, who made Come and See, a film that is widely regarded as classic as well among many others.

Mind blown. I bought those two films during one of the early Criterion sales because they sounded like something I would enjoy. That usually works out pretty well for me. I outdid myself on that one. Wings was very good and I hoped that The Ascent would prove to be as good. I was completely floored by what an amazing film it was and remember thinking what a loss her death was, not only to those who knew her but to the world of film.

Wow, "Come and See" is one of the most powerful cinematic representations on WWII I've seen.
So many scenes hauntingly remain in the memory.

I'll be checking out "Wings" and "The Ascent".
