Went to play a new Kingston Trio lp, and bam, The left channel of my preamp dies. I liked this particular preamp, a Yamaha Natural Sound c-80. Has 5 different settings for phone carts!!!

I've been wanting a tube based preamp for some time.

So, the magic question...do I get this one fixed or buy an inexpensive tube preamp??

    What do you guys say?

    thanks for the help.

Get this one fixed for now. Should be a simple fix.

Then yes, I'd get a simple tube pre. :) Build a Foreplay.

Guys, my kit building days are behind me, I'm afraid.

What other basic tube pres would you recommend?

Depending on how you define inexpensive, I suggest you listen to the Audible Illusions Modulus 3A preamp. (www.audibleillusions.com)

I'm not affiliated with the company; I'm just a very satisfied owner.

(Please don't take this as a thread crap, it is not my intention.)

I just got a used McIntosh C33 solid state preamp, and it is amazing! It is so transparent. I love it very much. It has the transparency of tubes, and the quietness of solid state. I urge you to consider used McIntosh gear, if you can't afford the new stuff. Also, I have heard great things about the McIntosh MX110 tube preamp/tuner. Steve has one, and he loves it!

I believe you can also buy them for around $150.00-$200.00 added for pre-built.
