Odd, but I disagree. To each their own, I suppose. I think the remaster sounds good for what it is, but the original is where it's at. I think Regatta is just a good sounding album to begin with, and luckily they haven't put too much effort into ruining the sound.

The original "Summertime Dream" is also excellent and cheap.

I like this CD, it's not bad at all (Santana III legacy edition), but I always felt that the upper end is boosted. Sometimes this bothers me.

Can anyone offer a comparison with the original LP?

  4. Just 3 very good ones, it's difficult to compare different albums:

The Who - Quadraphenia (Polydor Germany 1996 remix)
Toto - Fahrenheit (Columbia Japan mini vinyl edition)
Roger Waters - Amused to death (Columbia 1992 CD)

Unlike GITM, Reggatta was not a well recorded album to start with. I feel that boosting the sound levels on this one with Digital Compression only succeeds in bringing out more of it's flaws. As a result the remaster is a rather harsh/abrasive listen when compared to the smooth flowing analogue quality of the original.

Folks, the original Reggatta is very cheap ($5.99-$7.99 in my area). I recommend picking one up and doing your own compare on this one. My guess is for most, an A/B compare will prove to you as it did for me that the original is as close to the vinyl as we will ever get.

Too hard to identify best (I have MANY great sounding cds). One that sounds stellar to me is James Taylor - Sweet Baby James (Made In West Germany By Polygram). Stuff mastered by SH or Barry Diament... too many stellar sounding to pick a best 3.

The first three that came to mind:

Elton John - Live in Australia (the sonics on this one took me totally by surprise)
Lyle Lovett - Joshua Judges Ruth
    k.d. lang - Ingenue

I definitely agree. My first introduction to digital Police were the 2003 remasters, which over time I grew to hate. Just too dull and compressed, I guess. Then I went on an SACD kick, but those didn't sound quite right, either. Kind of like the remasters, with a little less compression. They sound fine, just not great. I picked up the original A&M Regatta (it was the one Police SACD I didn't have), and it is really one my best sounding CDs. There's not much consensus regarding the Police CDs. Original US CDs (for the most part), Message In A Box, early Japanese pressings, all should be good to go. Unless you are heavily invested in SACD, there's no need to seek those out -- they are pointless, as I also feel the 2003 remasters are. But, as we are seeing, YMMV. I think the only guarantee is that the next remasters will sound worst.

  9. Either of the Jason Falkner on Elektra cd's.

The Beatles s/t, aka "White Album"

Lindsey Buckingham - 'Law And Order'

Wondermints - 'Mind If We Make Love To You?'

Sorry, couldn't stop at three. Those last two discs I use for stereo demos ALL THE TIME.

Fagen's 'Nightfly' gets a lot of play around here too.

My often misfiring memory cells are telling me this was released on Atlantic. It is a great sounding disc and features Bill Frisell on the gee-tar.

I'll go along with this. The original pressing of Rapture is spectacular; don't know if it was remastered.

    Anita Baker - Rapture
AC/DC - For Those About to Rock (Diament)
Paul McCartney - Tug of War (Black Triangle, UK Blackface, or US Columbia)

Just 3 that I happened to listen to this weekend. All sound great.

Interesting - I heard the title track recently off of the "Mo" promo CD set that Warner Bros. produced to honor Mo Ostin. I thought it sounded fantastic, and figured I should get the entire album. Is there a particular pressing I should get of this CD?

For Me,it's the 40th Anniversary Package of Pink Floyd's "Piper At the Gates Of Dawn"-ESPECIALLY THE MONO MIX!! WOW!! The others,I'd guess, are Elvis Presley's Debut RCA Lp on CD and "Hysteria-Deluxe Edition" by Def Leppard! (At least,to me,anyways..) Michael Boyce

  22. I have quite a limited selection, but here are my 3 picks:

    - Frank Zappa / "The Yellow Shark" (US version) (I use this one from time to time as a showcase piece - especially for the reeds and the piano - I think it is terrific!) (1993)

    - Pink Floyd / "Meddle" (early 90s remaster, US) (cheating a bit here, since this one belongs to my daughter's boyfriend) ...OR, if cheating not allowed, how about the John McLaughlin Trio live at the Royal Festival Hall, for another live, but lower techno set (original JMT, Canadian) (1989)?

    - Jethro Tull / "Thick As A Brick" (25th anniversary remaster) (1993)

I really like the sound of these Cd's (they are all the regular versions you can buy at the store )

    1. James Taylor - Sweet baby james (The new SH mastered vinyl is even better but the cd is very close to it )

    2. Neil young - Zuma ( I just love turning the volume on that one)

    3. Randy newman - Randy newman (Something new under the sun), on the booklet it say that it was remastered by Lee Herschberg but i don't recall seeing another version of it, anyway, it's a great sounding CD).
