So I got this awesome new Fisher tube receiver, and it's made me want to hear more jazz. The little bit that I have sounds amazing. The horns really sing.

My jazz knowledge is kind of limited. Here's what I have (all vinyl)

MILES DAVIS BITCHES BREW GP 26
MILES DAVIS KIND OF BLUE CS 8155
JOHN COLTRANE A LOVE SUPREME REISSUE
    JOHN COLTRANE BLUE TRANE REISSUE
JOHN COLTRANE GIANT STEPS AT 1311
JOHN COLTRANE MY FAVORITE THINGS 1361 MONO

I have a bunch of Brubeck too, but not Time Out, which I can't seem to find.

Two questions for the jazz experts out there...

    1) I like the whole bop horn thing. Who else does that besides Miles and Trane. Naturally I like Brubeck too.

    2) How are jazz reissues, in general? The Trane reissues I have are awesome. What should I have, and what should I avoid?

I'm talking all vinyl here too, by the way.

    Thanks!

When you say "bop horn thing" that's pretty open ended...
    The obvious ones:
Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins, Dexter Gordon, Jackie McLean, Clifford Jordan, Clifford Brown, Lee Morgan, Booker Little.
Those just off the top of my head. I'm sure you'll get plenty of help with the reissue issue. Good luck!

Yeah it is general but unfortunately I don't know enough to be specific. I really love Coltrane though before he got too avant-garde

You needs you some Thelonious Monk. Brilliant Corners is a nice start. It's got Sonny Rollins on the sax for bonus goodness.

If you go only vinyl there's a ton of great jazz you will never hear.

At Philly....I know, I know. But I haven't bought a CD since 2009, and my ears have really gotten used to vinyl.

I don't think some of the people responding to the OP are actually reading his post. He clearly lists Miles Davis Kind Of Blue as a record he already owns and then someone states " There's always MD Kind Of Blue"???
The OP also states that he likes " the whole Bop horn thing" and people recommend Herbie Hancock HH, Thrust and then Joe Farrell?????

Please if you are going to respond to a post at least read it. Archtop posted a great starter list for you Guy. I really recommend you thoroughly sample some of the albums recommended to you on here to save time and money. If you don't know about the topic asked please don't just throw out names of things that you think are Jazz because YOU think they are Jazz.

I would have had a number of additional listings, including OC's Free Jazz, the Shape of Jazz to Come, most of Sun Ra's '56-'61 output, but I opted to focus on his original request. As it is, the list I posted was originally from a different context, so there are piano trios and somesuch in there that the OP did not ask for. I have about 1,200 jazz releases on CD and/or vinyl, and the list I posted is indeed a good place to start, and nothing more.
