So something just clicked: the Triiad sessions are most likely the original Oceanside/Countryside sessions for these songs, and the Woodland sessions are probably from after Reprise hear that album and suggested he overdub a full band over those tapes.

I think so, too. But that would mean he'd only completed half an album's worth of material when Reprise made that suggestion, as the recordings from Four Strong Winds onwards were only recorded in Nashville. Unless there are separate recordings of those songs from Triad which haven't been released in any form.

Here's the pre-solo stuff. It's not as exhaustive as your list, as it doesn't include any songs which weren't written by Neil Young, or any alternative mixes.

Sorry about the rubbish formatting. I don't know how to do a better job with an itunes playlist.

Either that, or maybe he recorded different takes of the remaining songs altogether in Nashville.

It's possible that the Oceanside part of the unreleased album was the unadorned Triad songs (Florida being by the ocean), and the Countryside part was the stuff recorded exclusively in Nashville (Nashville being the home of country music). Like a countryfied version of Bringing It All Back Home.

Also, if anyone wants the Word version of this, message me and I'll send it your way.

And on a side-note: around 8-9 years ago I reached out to Elliot Roberts' office and submitted a proposal to write a sessionography book that would be for Neil's work what John McDermott and Mark Lewishon's books have been for Hendrix and The Beatles, respectively, along with some writing samples of pieces that I had done for ASU's music blog and other places (just so they could see what my writing style was like). To my surprise, they actually got back to me and said that they would send them to Roberts to look at, but I never heard anything after that. But just in the odd chance that anyone in his orbit reads this forum, my offer is still on the table! :p

By the way, as far as I know, the only alternative mixes of the pre-solo tracks listed above are the original mixes of Down To The Wire (with a Stills vocal), Mr Soul and On The Way Home. All of those are on the Buffalo Springfield box set, and they have the original recording dates from the list.

Not taking into account the stereo mixes of the first album, or the mono mixes of the second.

I should also point out that I haven't included It's So Hard To Wait, because although Neil Young co-wrote it, he didn't play on it.

OK, so I was looking at the official site for House of David just now (because I had never heard of that studio and wanted to know more about it), and look what I found in their photo gallery:

Pictures from these findings at The House of David were published 2 years ago on Thrasher's Wheat. There also others safety masters and multitrack tapes from the Old Ways I sessions. 31st January 1983 was the date in which the songs were pulled to the master. Sessions ended on 29th January 1983. It was also displayed the reel of Soul Of Woman, dated 29th January 1983.

What's the deal with Buffalo Springfield stuff? By that, I mean how does Neil get to use not just his own Buffalo songs, but a few outtakes as well?

Also, is this blocking the path to decent (deluxe edition or box set, ala Pet Sounds or Sgt Pepper) reissues of Buffalo Springfield albums?

I really wanna see Buffalo Springfield deluxe editions happen, and I think - to a degree- Neil has to let go of his "de facto" custodian role for that band, and focus on his solo career for the archives.

I don't mind the relevant Buffalo Springfield tracks being on his archives website, but sometime soon the whole band needs their due treatment, not just in a piecemeal Neil-focused setting.

You can’t listen to any Buffalo Springfield tracks on the Neil Young Archives website. This is just a playlist I put together.

A Buffalo Springfield box set was released about 10 years ago, with outtakes and demos from all three songwriters. I’m not sure how much unreleased material is left.

To this point the eventual unreleased stuff is becoming Public Domain here in Europe, so there isn't any inventive to release it. Anyway also the rights on solo demos (as Neil' High School Graduation)belong to the 3 surviving members , again no incentive for releasing it and too much complicated dealing with Neil and everyone involved.
The Buffalo Springfield, Stills, Neil' s Archives Vol.1 boxsets have been already published, so I think that it's unlikely that we'll get other releases.

    A shame if that's true.

I'd like to think there's enough previously unbootlegged & unreleased stuff in the vaults to make deluxe editions viable. To be honest the way the stuff is spead out over box sets at the moment is shocking.

Fantastic! Thanks much for sharing your doc.

Here's a read-only link to a similar effort I undertook to collate the information in the liner notes to the CSN, Crosby, and Stills boxes. If anyone can send me scans for the notes from the Nash box, I'll add that info as well.

I'll be glad to update with corrections, feel free to PM me.
