Ok, back to back listening and sure enough the same exact version as Hawks and Doves...disappointing. I guess it fits the album and was recorded at the same time. Too bad there was not some badass alternative version of that song, what a great one!
Does anyone know if Star of Bethlehem comes from the same session as The Old Homestead? They sound similar in production
Ok, my apologies, I am an idiot! I read what I typed again and meant to write Live Rust is a very average live 70's recording. Obviously Rust Never Sleeps is absolutely beautiful sound. My reading comprehension is poor after a long day at work!
I always thought that record sounded weird. Kind of thin. Drums especially. Is it any better remastered?
You know,I do own both and was not blown away by the Live Rust remaster. I feel the original might beat it or they are pretty equal. I do agree it is an odd sounding album.
I tend to agree; Weld is often in Live Rust's shadow, but the performances featured are even better. The Horse had improved massively between 1978 and 1991, and the quality of Neil's lead guitar playing was at its all-time high. There were also a lot more classic songs added to the repertoire: Crime In The City, Free World, the Ragged Glory songs. The problem with Live Rust is that some of the versions they chose simply aren't that good. I think the Rust Never Sleeps film is a much better document of the tour overall than its accompanying live album.
Was lucky enough to take the last remaining copy at my record store downtown, for seven little dollars.. Greatness! What a fantastic album. Love the Crazy Horse cuts, so much wild energy! Is it punk-country-rock? I remember now how it was well received back in the days. I guess the Blu-Ray is a must have. Thanks for pointing this gap in my collection!
After two weeks, finally I got the chance to open it for a first spin. Visually all around is perfect, and plays as it looks (EU copy). Played one time only and...I have to admit, not a very big big fan of Neil here, but... I feel I need to listen to it again and again and again...to me it is a jewel !
Finally got my copy. Man! I've been a huge Neil fan since jr. high way back in the early '70s and hearing this album felt so good (even thought I already have or have heard most of it). Nearly brought a tear to my eye.
No offense to David Briggs...but I think the legend is that the mixing of Live Rust was done very quickly with some help from a mountain of nose-candy...hence the thin, brittle sound...sometimes things just don't work out right...but we've accepted it because it was the first live Neil Young album that featured a bunch of popular Neil tracks (obviously TFA was all unreleased tracks) It does lack mid-range, IMO... I prefer the balanced acoustic/electric beauty of Rust Never Sleeps.
I received my HH album on the day of release. There were no posters, lyric sheets, etc included. The LP sounds wonderful. But was I shortchanged? Thanks!
The LP copy I got had the lyrics printed in a massive fold out almost-poster. Not much else to it than that really, but strange that people have reported getting copies without it though.
