The mix on the Rust Never Sleeps film is much more exciting than either Live Rust or the electric songs on the RNS album. The performances are also significantly better. For me it is the definitive document of this period, perfectly capturing the atmosphere and excitement of a Crazy Horse gig in a way that the album fails to do.
Unfortunately, this theory sounds so Neil young like that it almost definitely has to be what happened! Good for everyone though if more archives stuff is coming!
In 106 pages, have we gotten actionable data on whether the Hitchhiker vinyl is AAA? NY releases usually are, just wondering.
Yes...and it was just released on Bluray during the summer of 2016. https://www.amazon.com/Rust-Never-Sleeps-Blu-Ray-Young/dp/B01D58BE3K
I just got mine copy. I will not say its a finished version. The mix is not quite there. Its close to a finished version but maybe that's why it was never out previously?
With all due respect...it's a guitar and a voice...what sort of mix were you expecting? It's mono...not much else you can do with it.
Mainly the first song Niels voice goes off mike a couple times. Only listened to the 1st side so far. I'm not saying its bad, but not like other acoustic songs from that 70s period.
Well...it's in 1080p, so it looks a lot better...better colors and not-so-dark. Also the 24/192 audio track is pristine...so...you be the judge! The "Roadeyes" are more visible as they scurry around and peer out from next the the props and amps on stage, too...adds an extra bit of humor to the movie... Just a glimpse of low-resolution...since ya gotta use URLs here for any movie stills. Looks a lot better on Bluray on a giant TV...
Overall it is well worth getting, but the ultra-sharp definition of the remaster has its downside, making the grain in the film very noticeable. The film itself was rather murky in the first place, and was not originally intended to be viewed on high-detail 21st century TVs. So it's not necessarily something you'd pick to clearly demonstrate to someone the sharpness or detail of the blu-ray format.
Thanks -- I'm a little late to the party when it comes to the brilliance of Rust Never Sleeps, and I hadn't owned Live Rust until the recent ORS box, so I'll have to get this to complete the "Rust Trilogy."
Is that photo from a different gig (before Neil cut his hair)? Either way, the blu-ray (as enjoyable as it is) is a lot more grainy looking, as you'd expect from a rough-around-the-edges concert film from about 40 years ago. It's not a film that was shot with high-definition in mind.
Yup, big poster thing. I didn't unfold it. It was oddly folded, so I didn't want to relive the days of yore predating google maps.
