Thanks for this. I just bought The Stones - Let It Bleed but don't have a way to play the files with anything on my computer that I normally use to play downloaded music. Any suggestions for how to play these?

I listened to the sample they had on the site and the music sounded so full! Amazing! I just want to be able to play the files I bought. Thanks!

If you're on a PC, try Foobar with the latest free SA-CD decoder module. It will decode DSD to PCM. The sound is excellent.

Plus DBpoweramp can convert DSF to whatever you prefer... another option :)
Edit: Just make sure to use the bitrate DSP to preserve 24bit

Thanks Plan9! I'm listening to Midnight Rambler and it sounds fantastic! This got me very interested before I started listening to the songs: "all of the tracks come from the ABKCO masters and utilize Direct Stream Digital (DSD) — which is what ABKCO successfully used in the Rolling Stones albums reissued in 2003."

This sounds the best I've ever heard of these songs. :) Thanks again Plan9!

Thanks for this too. I have dbPoweramp, so I'll see how that works too. Much thanks!

You may want to play with the resolution output for the best sound. In Foobar, go to Preferences > Tools > SACD

My favorite settings are the following:

PCM samplerate: "176400" [or the highest sample rate your soundcard can play]
DSD2PCM Mode: [if your soundcard accepts 32bit] "Installable FIR (Floating Point) 40kHz" [load the corresponding text file]
    if not: "Multistage (Fixed Point)"

    YMMV

I did the first part when I downloaded the foobar plugin. I'll check the other and settings now and optimize foobar for these files. Many thanks again! I can't get over the sound of the files. I never did buy the ABKCO releases in 2003, but thought about doing it a lot. If they put the whole catalog up, I'll buy them!

Has anyone seen Fable of the Reconstruction for sale as DSD or 24/96 in Europe?
It's my 4th favourite ever LP by anyone, I'm desperate!

We need a scheme where friendly forum Americans buy downloads for us poor
starved Europeans and we pay you by pay pal or send you Beatles LPs :)

It's the most recent remastered version -- pretty squashed.

Be warned, I picked up Fables and its just ok....I've done a casual comparison and its not a night and day difference...

the other 24,192 REMs have been too loud , probably terrible DR, but this is a very very important LP to me, I guess I should really do a needledrop. But thanks for making me feel slightly better

Do you guys think the 24/176 flac version or the physical BD disc version of Let It Bleed is comparable to the DSD version? I hesitate buying DSD because playback options are limited for me in that format.

It is certainly comparable, it is the exact same mastering since the 2002 SACD. Depending on your system, one *might* sound very slightly better than the other.

I've been itching to try the DSD of Tea For The Tillerman, but need a coupon code to pull the trigger. If anyone hears of a code, please post!

This is a bizarre release, because it's a needle drop:

The vinyl source seems to be a 1997 Alto Analogue LP reissue (mastered by Bernie Grundman, pressed at RTI)

If the tapes had been in good shape in 1997 when Grundman mastered the LP reissue, how come they are no longer usable today? It would be the only legit reason to make a needle drop instead of a transfer from the master tapes.

Sometimes the record labels are unable to find the master tapes. And when they do, time isn't always kind to the tapes. So there are reasons why a reissue or download would either not be done at all - or in this case - would come from a needle drop.
I'm curious enough to download this one and have a listen. :)

The surprising part to me is that they're bragging about it being a needledrop, as if that's a good thing. o_O
