IMO, the new 2-CD Anthology is the best-sounding I've ever heard the Guess Who! I thought the 1999 Greatest Hits was the best, but after doing some A-B'ing, the new set is warmer and far easier on the ears. The 1999 set, which I assume has the same mastering as the 3-CD Ultimate Collection, has that grating treble spike that I've found mars many recent RCA CDs. Kudos to Vic Anesini for his great mastering on this one! It looks like from this set alone I'll be investigating the band's individual albums. I am really digging "The Answer" and "Hoe Down Time"! Are the Buddha CDs really that good?
Some like them, some don't. American Woman and Live at the Paramount never sounded as good as they do now....but that's IMHO
I just picked up the new Guess Who anthology the other day, and can also attest to it's excellent sound. Kym, I also think that the Buddah CDs sound great, and would definitely be a worthwhile addition to your Guess Who CD collection. Ed Hurdle HeavyDistortion
Wow--hadn't heard about this one. Vic Anesini's on my short list of Trustworthy Mastering Engineers and I'm delighted to know he's had a hand in this release. Thanks for the heads-up, Kym.
Are you guys reporting that this new anthology sounds better than the Buddah's. Those sounded like a copy of analog tape too me. In what way do you hear better sound? Thanks
What? No "So Long, Bannatyne"? I love that song. Track List DISC 1 1. Shakin' All Over 2. It's My Pride 3. When Friends Fall Out 4. These Eyes 5. A Wednesday in Your Garden 6. The new set's cover, so you know what to look for in stores: I'm glad to hear there's a GW compilation available that's both reasonably comprehensive and nice-sounding. I can't help noticing that the number of that band's best-ofs is starting to reach Doorsian proportions. The Best Of The Guess Who The Greatest Of The Guess Who Track Record American Woman, These Eyes & Other Hits The Ultimate Collection Greatest Hits Platinum & Gold Collection Anthology Not to mention Sundazed's Shakin' All Over comp of earlier '60s material.
Reb, I don't have any of the Buddha remasters yet, but I feel as far as compilations go, this new one is the best-sounding one I've heard so far.
The newest anthology includes the group's 1965 hit Shakin' All Over, but does that track still have the extremely loud bass boost heard on the original Scepter 45? GM
Does anyone remember exactly what was wrong with the 2 cd Track Record set? I remember reading something about it but I can't remember if it was out of phase or what...
Bad eq (very wonky midrange) and ugly noise-reduction. A disappointing mastering job IMO, even though Jack Richardson was involved. Good liner notes, though.
Just my 2 cents here, but how could they leave off a great track like Proper Stranger or Runnin' Down The Street and put something lame as These Show Biz Shoes on there? I'm all for the improved sound quality though. If any group needs it it's The Guess Who.
