My gift to myself at the end of the blood sucking in two years from my ex is going to be a pair of Harbeth SLH5+. This style of speaker and Alan Shaw are the most amazing speakers. I can honestly say I think they will be the last pair of main speakers I buy. Everytime I hear Harbeth I have no idea how they are able to come up with the sound. I've heard more expensive and cheaper but it's a very soulful type of sound from it.

Can't wait to hear what these sound like.

these are the Andrew Jones designed super cheap ones right? :D

Having heard the 40.1 it's hard to imagine how it could be improved but I am sure these will be great.

    Next will be the C7ES4...perhaps.

...and, oh yeah, no better time to pick up the fabulous 40.1's.

And (per Alan Shaw) you can drive 'em with any old amp >35 watts!

And none of those expensive snakeoil speaker cables are needed either. Voila!

What I'd love to see is something in between the P3 and the Compact 7, in both size and price.

But they sound better with a good amp.

I think that number was 50W for the 40.1. But I'm sure they shined with 150W. :)

I heard HL5+ on the end of a SuperNait. Yes, they bloody well shined. Along with the LM/DeVore system I heard awhile back, it's pushing me dangerously close to wanting to spend five figures on a hifi again ...

That's the one thing that makes me shy away from Harbeth speakers; the fact that they apparently need some considerable power to drive them. I'm picking up an MC452 next weekend so that point is probably moot, but eventually, I'd like to augment my amp with a vintage 30-40 watt tube amp and I can't imagine that the Harbeths would be a good match when most of their speakers are rated at 85-ish db and a 4-6 ohm impedance. Still, I'm sure these speakers sound great as they get rave reviews from everyone.

40w of tube power should be more than adequate unless you have a very large room. There's more to drivability than the headline db figure. Just don't use 5 watt SE amps with them.

Great with the Supernait, outstanding with the LFD!

Not really. A low power tube amp is fine with these speakers, depends on what volume you like your music at and of course the genre of music.
My old 30 watt naim nait 3 worked fine with the Harbeths and now the more powerful LFD works even better but that is not simply down to watt power.

Different strokes for different folks in all cases. I recommend you try the mix and match approach and see how these things work in your room.

If you're itching for a pair of P3ESR's but they're a little rich for your blood consider the Spendor S3/5R2.

They're five hundred dollars cheaper, much better looking and very similar in sound quality.

    I own both.

Call Chad Stelly at Acoustic Sounds for more info, that's where I bought both the Spendors and the Harbeths so he's very familiar with both.
