Well they would probably have to add a writer publishing credit for that second song. Towards the end the lead guitar plays a continuous rift. What song is it from ? I can't remeber or place it.

After the release of solo projects the Airplane reconvened for their sixth studio album. The initial sessions in 1970 were aborted and Marty Balin made the decision to leave the group. The album sessions began anew in early 1971 after Grace Slick had given birth to her first child.

The group had replaced Spencer Dryden on drums with Joey Covington and was augmented by Papa John Creach on violin on several tracks. Both musicians had worked with Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady in Hot Tuna during the Airplane's hiatus. The album opens with another Paul Kantner anthem, When the Earth Moves Again and continues on with stellar contributions from Jorma, Grace Slick and Joey Covington.

This expanded edition features selections from the 1971 album sessions and an extended jam on Jorma's, Feel So Good. The artwork features a recreation of the stunning original album graphics. The first release on the Airplane's then new Grunt label was one of their best selling albums and nearly cracked the Top 10 upon initial release. The new mastering, by Vic Anesini, was derived directly from the original master reels and proudly sits alongside Iconoclassic's expanded Thirty Seconds Over Winterland release.

I've always thought Bark was terribly underrated. "Lawman" is a chilling tale. "Third Week in Chelsea" has gone on to be a Jorma concert staple. And my other two favorites, "Rock and Roll Island" and "War Movie" are best when played back to back. And of course, Jack's bass playing is amazing.

Same, except the box set version is faded at 9:23. The boot version fades at 10:18.

Another great quad mix, buried & gone now. That was the only way to hear separation on this album (and the quad was the main mix, as it was one of RCA's earliest quads, when they thought that those mixes would be the ones to survive into the future). When The Earth Moves, sounds almost normal on it, Pretty As You Feel and Thunk were not mono, etc. BTW, I love that this album treated 1975 as some long-off future date. Another lost opportunity to do a Steve Wilson type release and get classic surround mixes out there. Unfortunately, Iconoclastic keeps releasing LPs that had surround mixes, like Hot Tuna, The Guess Who releases , The Hoople, Isely Bros., etc, without including surround, pretty much guaranteeing them being buried forever.

Was the quad mix of Bark ever released on vinyl? This is the first I've heard of this.

The 13:32 version of "Pretty As You Feel" smokes the album version. Papa John overdubs a second fiddle and goes wild jamming with Jorma and Jack. You can hear this version on YouTube. Has this been officially released anywhere?

Anyways, I'm going to order the new Bark right now. Keep 'm coming, Iconoclassic!

I love Bark and always have. However, this band should have been called "Jefferson Tuna". It really wasn't an Airplane album. Same as "Long John Silver', really good but not a JA record. The latter was the beginning of the Jefferson Starship and also included Kaukonen and Cassidy.

Got mine from Bull Moose and I concur with all, sounds fantastic! Only quibble- too bad you didnt reprint the 4 page liner notes by Jeff Tamarkin from the RCA cd. I'm going to stick that booklet into this new cd and toss the old cd.

Love this release. I ordered '30 seconds over Winterland' on Iconoclassic from Amazon and it shipped too! Even though it was out of stock.

Side A of Bark is as good as anything the Airplane ever did.
