Yep, just saw one in the Sony store in the mall. They must be out in the USA already as Canada usually has to wait at least a month for new products!

    Model DVP NC 650 V
    5 disc carousel
    2 and 5 channel output

Very interesting - something that plays everything, including CDs (my cup of tea!). Now if DCC releases either format, I can play it!

The only problem is that it can't pick up the HDCD encoding on the HDCD discs. Oh well.

I like the carousel idea - what a great way to A/B discs!

And it's cheap, too! Only $699.99 CAD (or about $350.00 US).

But the sales guy had to look up the item in the book to give me some details. Not very well trained - he had to hunt around the store to even find it. I'll have to check the Sony website for more info.

So I have a question to the board: Has anyone checked this player out? There must be some competition out there - I am not convinced that Sony is an "audiophile" product.

Any comments would be appreciated! Thanks!
    :D

I can't speak to the quality of this player, but let me say this:

I hate companies that force you to deal with "factory authorized dealers/servicers" and then you get some half-assed ***** for a salesperson/tech. Why, oh why, do companies forbid Internet sales and then force you to drive 100 miles to deal with these people (and typically full MSRP for a price). Am I the only one who has these problems?

Does it play CD-R's? Sony DVD-V players don't.

Yes, this model plays CD-R/CD-RW. All of Sony's new DVD-V players have this capability.

Well Patrick & Dave, I agree with you. The weird thing is that this was an older guy. In his '40's I'd guess. As I was looking at the unit, he was reading from the brochure. Sheeesh!

Anyway, I'll wait for the boxing week sale if I decide on this. I thought there were other manufacturers out there.... ??? I'd better start hunting around!

I'll just have to stay away from auditioning SACD's ;) . And start looking for some titles!

Thanks for the info., Sam S! That's good news!

If you don't want to buy at a local store, or, more likely, your local stores don't have what you want, the best place by far I know of is
    http://www.oade.com/

The Oade Brothers are in Georgia. Friendly, knowledgeable, fast, cheap, authorized dealer.

I'm still booting myself ih the rear for not getting an SACD capable player a few months ago. Oh well, it does simplify life a bit.

Well I just heard Mike Oldfield Tubular Bells. It's a different mix. I think the "Wolfman" is gone (I had to leave the store for a bit)! Other stuff is different! What gives?!? OK, so it's clear, you can hear the instruments clearly, etc. but where is MY Tubular Bells?

Do I want this? Even if I do a 5.1 set up at home (I have no plans for that right now - don't care for it. Not interested. I sit in the audience, not the center of the stage.), I'll still ask "Wheres the Wolfman"?!?!?

Well if DCC comes out with SACD, at least I know it'll be the original mix!

Just saw a single disc version for $299 (DVP-NS500V) very tempting... especially on my budget... Would still like one that does BOTH SACD and DVD-A... But I may just have to wait or go for this one. ;)

Wait, Ian! The one I described will probably be $100.00 more - $399.00! And good old Sony will discount it during the boxing day sales - like about a whopping $20.00! !

And what happens if DCC also releases DVD audio stuff AND SACD stuff? You'd have to buy another DVD player (unless you have one now). And don't forget the DCC release dates have been delayed until early next year. Steve can correct me if I'm wrong.

And there must be other distributors... wonder how we can find out when these will be discontinued? THEN it'll go for a better price, don't you think? And it might be nice to wait for an unbiased product review, too!

Patience.... I just hate it when I snap something up and next month it's $100.00 (or more) cheaper. I ask myself - well, was it worth $100.00 for the 4 SACDs that you played?

All good things come to those who wait! I was expecting a DVD / SACD hybred player 2 years from now. That's what Brack Electronics told me - quite haughtily, I might add. Maybe I should visit them again :D . It could be fun! ;)

etronics.com has that model for $279:
    http://www.etronics.com/product.asp?stk_code=sondvpns500v&AID=531338&PID=179100

    (I hope that link works)

I hope prices taper off as Christmas approaches. I, too, would prefer DVD-A and HDCD, though. Heck, throw in mp3 decoding.

Wonder how well these Sony units function as transports.

Geez, weren't some of you the same guys who were riduculing me for my interest in SACD just a few months ago? My, how times change. :D

BTW, Gary, ask Steve what he thinks of that Tubular Bells mix. It's a pretty mind-blowing remaster, not that I'm a big fan of the music.

Well, GregM, *I* was not riduculing you for your SACD interest. Maybe you are just a bit ahead of your time, eh? But I can certainly see why there IS interest - wow! And a Hoffman would sound soooo much better, too!

Steve, if you are reading this, what DO you think of the Oldfield SACD Tubular Bells? I own it (the extent of my SACD related purchases, so far) but I've only "SACD" heard it once in a stereo store, thru cheap speakers, etc. It was impressive in it's clarity but - as I've said - it's not the original mix.

Wish YOU could redo that CD but that's doubtful, eh? :(

I agree that the Tubular Bells SACD disc is very impressive. Surprising that a master tape from the '70s has held up so well.

And as one who remembers this disc from the quad era of CD-4 and SQ, it's sounding much better in Multichannel SACD than it did in the past - to be sure !

Yes, the Good Guys chain is showing all 3 of the new Sony DVD Video/Multichannel SACD players in their flyer this week. Should be a popular line.

Bmoura (or anyone) do these players play multi channel DVD-A AND multi channel SACD? I'd assume so but I think I will confirm this before I purchase one.

    Just thought I'd mention it!

No - they handle DVD Video and Multichannel and Stereo SACD, but not DVD-Audio.

Can I ask a dumb question (since I am just getting interested in SACD / DVD-A)?

If the Sony players do not play DVD-A, does that mean that they do not play DVD "audio only" discs?

If the Sony players CAN play DVD audio discs, what is the difference between a DVD and DVD-A player?

I think my new motto may be *Never ask a sales clerk* .... *sigh*

Regarding the Pioneer Player, THIS ones a winner. The kicker is that it plays MP3s off a CDR AND has progressive scan output!!

Holy Mackeral!! There is nothing this baby cant do!!

My guess 750$ by December on line.
