Box sets are among the things I miss least about my CD days. There was never any good or convenient way to store them, so either the boxes were somewhere else, separate from the rest of that artists' titles, or you took the CD's out (if they came in individual jewel cases inside the box) and filed them away, but still had to waste precious space storing a then-empty box. Definitely were things designed for suburbanites, not urban-dwellers. I was glad that eventually they started being (re-)packaged in more convenient forms, like the Fleetwood Mac 25 Years box, but that was toward the end of my CD days.

I only own a few vinyl sets: the Stones 64-69 box, Dylan and Beatles mono, Hendrix Winterland, and the first Bowie box, but I like that, except for the unnecessarily large Beatles mono one, they fit in just fine on my Ikea LP shelves filed in with the rest of my vinyl.

Comprehensive, well-annotated box sets were one of the best strategies and marketing angles of the CD age... The completely satisfied both sides of the commerce equation -- they completely captured the fanatical completeists and marketing departments were able "mythologize" an over-priced product.

I still love buying CD box sets!

  3. CD: 10 Mahler sets alone. The complete Miles Davis 'metal spine' Columbia series, Mile's Plugged Nickel box, Miles 'bootleg'series, Bill Evans, Keith Jarrett, Charlie Parker, a couple of Coltrane sets, Monk on Riverside, Monk On Prestige, Bruckner, Brahms, Beethoven symphonies, Sibelius, Stravinsky, Debussy, Delius, Glen Gould's 'Brandenberg Variations'
Steely Dan, The Byrds, Beach Boys, Joy Division, Trojan roots reggae, Dusty Springfield, The Smiths, Springsteen, a Tom Waits Japanese Disk Union box (Swordfishtrombones) and Orphans. There are others..

LP: Capt Beefheart, New Order, Art Pepper, Mahler #2 and #3 with Bernstein, Kamasi Washington, Monk.

I like the idea of them - the presentation, notes, photos etc, and I love to have them, but I rarely play them as they are not proper albums and I don't always want to hear too much of one artist.

All I have is (apart from Bob Dylan Official Bootlegs):

    Peter Tosh - Honorary Citizen
Marvin Gaye - The Master 1961-1984
    Simply Dusty

I'm quite happy with those and want no more. Except maybe Fela Kuti...

I've only got two - Byrds and Jefferson Airplane - not many artists who have managed to keep a high standard throughout their career - I prefer making my own compilations

My first two were Alice In Chains and Springsteen's "Tracks."
Most of mine are looking back at artists I like or helped complete a theme or collection.
Others include "Abba, Bee Gees, Bon Jovi, Carpenters, Elton John, Heart, Carol King, Led Zeppelin, Stevie Nicks, Nirvana, R.E.M., Linda Ronstadt, Roxette, Carly Simon, Rod Stewart, and Donna Summer."
Biggest wish. Olivia Newton-John Box Set. USA version which includes video and the 40 or so tracks that have never been released here at all............ :)

I just discovered I do have one proper boxset I'd forgotten about
It's a remastered cd release discography, 3-albums from a local band in a cardboard box. That gets me out of the "no boxset zone" I guess. That and ¨The Punk Generation¨ . This one is depicted on Discogs as just ¨4CDs in a slipcase¨ for the '93 release boxset (mine) and a boxset for the '95 re-release ( states ¨in a box¨) so no boxset there either.

I never took interest in boxsets I guess coz they always include a lot of silly material I don't care about, or found out that I already owned a lot of what was in them. Then there's the fact these things are obnoxiously expensive down here. It all adds up I guess.

I remember taking an interest on the first SATBanshees ¨first 6 albums¨ boxset back when it came out, and despite I was interested in the first 4 albums, I didn't mind getting the CD for ¨Nocturne¨ (got it on DVD) and didn't mind giving ¨A Kiss In The Dreamhouse¨ another chance for the price of the whole package.

But I was warned about the hideous remastering problems and ended up hunting down those CDs individually and used.

I would think at least the Nuggets Box Set series would be essential ownership to most people here.

Good point; does a whatever-number album SET count as a boxset ?

I have owned very few box sets. The only box sets I currently own are the Radiohead box set that was released in 2007 and the recent Sepultura 6 cd set. The only reason I bought them was because it was an easy way to get the majority of their releases.

I had the Black Sabbath Paranoid box set ;however, I sold it about two months ago because I already have the 2cd version released in 2016. I just didn't need it.

I usually avoid box sets. Most of the time I don't find the extra material worth the price.

The most recent box I got -- the complete MGM Roy Orbison albums -- was discovered by a mouse who nibbled on the box. Grr!

I do not prefer boxed sets because they don't come in a jewel case. Where to shelve it? If I do buy one, I take out the CDs and put them in jewel cases, then throw the box in a pile in my attic. Sometimes, I take existing CDs and change the jewel case to a "double" to accomodate discs that come from boxed sets; so when I listen to a CD, sometimes there is a second "bonus" disc I put there.

I never really consider if it comes in a box a twofer, triple or whatever amount of discs. I have no idea how many i have although I would probably say quite a few. I only ask one question. Does it contain music I want to hear?

I understand why some people don't like boxsets because the large box can be a problem display-wise. But not all box sets are large, some fit right in with my other CDs. Like the Blue Oyster Cult and ELO cubes.
