I am late to the party, but I have really enjoyed it -- so far. The idea is brilliant. I cannot think of another decade for which obscure recordings within popular music in the broad sense, could be both accessible and varied to this degree. Still I would really like to do this also for other decades sometime. Thank you all for all great songs! I have listened (at least about 1/2 minute for each clip) to everything I did not know about before. I have collected songs for which I have sensed a certain potential, listened to these songs repeatedly, and sifted out the ones that did not hold up. I expect to "harvest" about 70-100 songs from this thread, when the process is done. Although I have listened through thousands of songs, this is still a much better quote than when I listen to, e.g., youtube suggestions. But it is also nice to follow people that are engaged in this thread (for example the alphabetic excursions of I Feel Free, that I really miss). I would like to share some favorites of mine too. January 1960: Kelly Sims Betrayed by Love/A Girl in Love. A lovely voice and nice sparse arrangement. The B side is my favorite, but could not find it separately on youtube.
Actually a B side (as so many great tracks are). Available on Fading Yellow Vol. 5 CD for anyone that's interested.
Of all great songs in this thread, Let the Rain Be Me is the song that I spontaneously think of when I try to pick a favorite.
Edwick Rumbold - Shades of Grey Obscure band from the London district Woolwich, who only released two singles. "Shades of Grey" is their second and final single, released on Parlophone in 1967.
I just got the NUGGETS II box this week and I'm listening to Disc 4 right now, and this track just came up and I went "Oh, LORDY!" What a great, great track, nothing earthshaking of course but dang, RELENTLESS beat. Woo hoo! Perfection. Gone and done in 2:20 - to quote Mike Myers as Austin Power, "And, I'm spent..!"
Los Shakers are definitely worth checking out. I think out of ALL the foreign Beatles sounding bands, they did it best. This is their Revolver-ish track (backwards guitar and even a little huff at the beginning):
ALL posts are from my own (40 year old) record collection... I am not leeching other people's uploads
