On Cinema at the Cinema / Decker / etc. (the "On Cinema Universe")

Frankly I'm a little surprised that no thread exists on this material!

I invite all interested parties to watch all of the shows On Cinema At the Cinema, Decker (the in-universe spy-show spinoff), and The Trial of Tim Heidecker in chronological order (plus the On Cinema Oscar specials if you really wanna dig in); it's basically all on YouTube with the exception of seasons 4-6 of Decker, which only ran on Adult Swim proper. Together, these shows and some other ephemera make up the so-called “OCU” (On Cinema Universe), wherein Tim Heidecker and Gregg Turkington play generally awful, childish versions of themselves, resulting in an amazingly intricate alternate-universe soap opera. A lot of it is improvised, but I also know they work from some pretty tightly written outlines. The central conceit of On Cinema is a movie review show, but it's way more about the characters and their ineptitude, petty personal hangups, grudges, delusions, and pet projects. Along the way you’ll find some pretty subtle and pointed satire skewering the YouTube/podcast landscape, Hollywood and celebrity culture, the stagnancy of 80s-90s cultural relics, alternative medicine and hucksterism, current-day politics and media, ill-advised business ventures and passion projects, drug abuse, midlife desperation, the subjectivity/obsolescence of “expertise” in the modern age, and just tons more. It's mostly pretty deadpan, and some of it can be a little cringey to watch, but to me the running gags make it quite fun to sit through multiple times. Like the Tim & Eric universe (which is an ENTIRELY separate project, as far as I’m concerned), the amateurish production value is a big part of the joke, but I think the humor in OCU is very different than that of the Tim & Eric universe (less weirdness for weirdness’s sake, for instance, less gross-out humor, and a much stronger dedication to character work and continuity).

On Cinema is currently in Season 10 on AdultSwim.com, but so far the highlight of the series might be the trial, which takes place after the events of On Cinema season 9. In season 9, one of Tim’s side projects is to host an EDM music festival, which goes horribly wrong (the episodes surrounding the festival happened to coincide with the real-life disastrous Fyre festival — a complete coincidence that made it all the more topical and hilarious). The trial deals with the aftermath. There’s obviously a lot of context here — Tim’s relationship with the quack Dr. San, Tim's escapist vanity-project music career, all the bizarre points of personal pride that make Tim, Gregg, and some of the other characters tick, and volumes more. From what I understand, for the trial they found some talented unknown actors with a background in law, reviewed the basic outline of the plot points, and just went for it, improvising along the way. I'm not sure how much of it was edited/re-shot in the process, but presumably some. I think it's a masterpiece, and a real crescendo of the continuity they've built over the last 5+ years.

It's not for everyone, but I personally think the OCU is one of the most ambitious and successful comedic enterprises of all time. The way they're able to improvise in-universe and weave in such subtle and specific jokes along the way -- well, it's staggering. I just can't get over how impressive and entertaining it all is. It takes some commitment as a viewer, though (and again, the humor really isn't for everyone), but because they're able to take certain throwaway jokes and organically extend them over years, it just gets more rewarding as it unfolds. It might sound convoluted, but the OCU is almost like a language that you learn to speak as a viewer/fan when you get acquainted with more and more of the in-jokes, references, and peculiar preoccupations of the characters. This is why a lot of the fans of the OCU post about it on social media sites “in-character” themselves, pretending like the events/characters of the show are real and generally picking sides in the ongoing feuds (i.e. TimHeads vs. GreggHeads) [note: this particular phenomenon can be irritating and alienating to non-fans who don’t yet speak the show’s dense language of references, and sometimes it’s even irritating to honest fans like myself who just want to talk about the show’s brilliance in real life without playing pretend But most of the time I’m happy to play along and bask in this beautiful postmodern tragic saga].

Has anyone else seen this material? Anyone curious?

I had precisely zero awareness of On Cinema until seeing this thread, but after reading it and the linked Vulture piece just now, I'm more than a bit curious to check it out, even if the prospect of dipping a toe into a decade's worth of episodes seems somewhat daunting.

 

Honestly, it's not too difficult to dive in. The On Cinema episodes are all around 7-10 minutes, so they clip by pretty quickly. It's very easy to bang out a few seasons in an afternoon.

I did not expect to see anything about Tim Heideker or the comedy of Tim and Eric on this particular board.

I have seen all the Oscar specials live and have watched the first few seasons of On Cinema, and my brother has been hounding me to really dive in!

I've been a fan since the early years where they did the Podcast type thing, then Tom Goes to The Mayor, and of course the Awesome Show.

While you are right its not for everybody, those gentlemen are comedy geniuses, beyond that even. Im always interested to see what they are putting out! Thanks for putting this thread together to remind me to dive into the OCU.

 

On Cinema is a bit of a commitment, but it's well worth the effort. Honestly, it's the most intricate satire out there right now. I look forward to where you get to season 9 and The Trial. It's just monumental stuff. And a movie in theaters tomorrow night! I'm excited to see it at the Belcourt here in Nashville.
