Priceless music, of course, but nothing new to tempt the Otis fan. It also misses out on one very interesting outtakes collection, Remember Me.

A blurb I read reminds people that this is the fiftieth anniversary
of Otis Blue: Otis Redding Sings Soul.

Who is going to point out that all of these could be combined, two per disc?

When I opened this thread, was hoping it'd be some kind of comprehensive recordings anthology, since his posthumous catalog is such a mess. A 'complete Otis Redding masters' set might actually have a purpose.

Me too. I have 8 out of 12 of these albums already (missing the last 3 & Live In Europe.) It's likely going to be down to the flip of a coin - or the price. :)

It's missing Remember Me because that's one of the few Otis Redding releases that Atlantic didn't "steal" from Stax, and so it's owned by Fantasy/Concord.

I already own half of these and a comprehensive hits collection. This set looks amazing but I just can't get myself to keep purchasing everything I own a second (and sometimes 3rd and 4th) time anymore when I still have so much I've yet to hear once.

I hope the set does Otis justice and brings him a whole new listening audience, but I just can't anymore.

This collection, which was 2.91 UK pounds from Amazon when I bought it (not a price mistake--it was around that price for ages--but seems to have gone up / out of print?) has 100 Otis Redding studio tracks, which is all but 1 track from his first album, everything from the next four studio albums, everything from the two posthumous studio albums, and more. Really, the only substantial things missing are the live shows. It's a DMG/Rhino product, too.

If it isn't mentioned then no as the lps are straight up reissues without bonus tracks according to the article.

But even without the Remember Me release, there are a bunch of non-LP singles and previously released rare cuts that should be included here. If you are going to release almost everything on 12 CDs, it wouldn't have hurt to add an extra CD to collect the other cuts.

Still, I'm glad that there is still a market for people to get these albums.

The sad thing is that the ONLY way to sell this kind of deeper catalog anymore is to package it like this. A win for customers, but reflects the very sad state of the music biz. I the total worldwide sales of all the albums included in this package last year was probably lower than a few thousand, including full price digital downloads.

Screw this. This guy's stuff has been issued more times than Who comps.

Wanna get some goods? Go for Otis Blue Deluxe 2 CD.

Great set, but unless there's some audiophile caliber remastering, these "package together every album out there" are kind of non-events.

  19. Indeed, it could been a continuation of the style and the series of the respective Wilson Pickett and Percy Sledge Atlantic Studio Recordings.

Rhino could make this set more comprehensive by including both mono and stereo mixes (where applicable) and adding the handful of non-LP Volt singles ("Mary's Little Lamb," "Don't Leave Me This Way," "I'm Depending On You," "I Can't Turn You Loose," "White Christmas," "Merry Christmas Baby," the single version of "Shake"... am I forgetting any?).

But Rhino can't do a rarities-packed collection in the style of Wilson Pickett or Percy Sledge because they don't own anything released after 1970, let alone anything still unreleased.

A vinyl box of all this would be great. Rhino's reissues of Pain In My Heart, Otis Blue, and The Dock of the Bay sound really good.

Thanks, but I've got all of the Otis I need, with enough duplicate tracks to make me nuts. Now some new live Otis might get me interested.
