Some great suggestions, and I absolutely concur with Forever Changes as right up there.

But how come no-one has mentioned Live Dead, arguably (by me at least) one of the most perfect albums of all time?

I was hoping you'd respond to my last post addressed to you.

Of course, keep in mind that you persuaded me to start skipping content that I think is flawed, so maybe I missed something.

  19. Fun thread. The affection for Dire Straits - Love Over Gold really lends credibility, as does the mention of Guaraldi's A Charlie Brown Christmas.

For new adds - Billy Joel - Turnstiles and Mellencamp - The Lonesome Jubilee.

For me, the perfect album (in today's download/streaming world a sadly fading concept), is a song cycle that lyrically and melodically holds together as a whole-in addition to the accessibility and imagination of each individual song. So with that in mind, off the top of my head, here goes:

    Willis Alan Ramsey-Willis Alan Ramsey
    Tonight's the Night-Neil Young
    Zuma-Neil Young
    Close to the Edge-Yes
    Relayer-Yes
    Sailin' Shoes-Little Feat
Dark Side of the Moon-Pink Floyd
    Mental Health-Aimee Mann
Lost in a Dream-The War on Drugs
    Aja-Steely Dan
    Strawberry-Wussy
    Wussy-Wussy
    Stealing Fire-Bruce Cockburn
    Security-Peter Gabriel
    Boomtown-David and David
    Time Out of Mind-Bob Dylan
    Love and Theft-Bob Dylan

Of course, I reserve the right to add to this list when I get home and check my record collection. ;-)

wow. first page in and theres that ubiquitous Hoffman forum Beatles hatred.

I'm not listing in classical music because, well, it seemed like the OP perhaps wanted more rock or pop albums. For this I left off any jazz too, altho there are many I think are perfect.

for rock and pop and country - just listing one of each

Led Zep 2 - in spite of the drum solo, which mercifully is short. The rest of is just so bloody good. Can you believe that drum solo was approaching 30 freaking minutes long in the late 70s? good grief.

Abba - Arrival - this is probably the only one here without exception. Spotty and iffy sort of recording/mixing good-for-the-times audio quality, to me, every song and performance is a winner.

EmmyLou Harris - Luxury Liner - now that I'm finally in a working country band, and can appreciate it, this album just gets better every time I hear it.

Aja is the first that came to mind for me.
There are most likely others but that one's a no-brainer.

Quite the opposite. The Beatles are one of my favorite bands. I just didn't want this thread to devolve into which Beatles album is more perfect than another Beatles album. I wanted it to be about something not just Beatles oriented. Luckily it seems to have worked. The Beatles have been mentioned but they didn't take over the thread.

perhaps, then this might have given someone (namely me) the wrong impression:

"I specifically left the Beatles off my list. I want actual perfect records"

that was taken out of context, however, even with context, one could easily misunderstand your intentions.

and then the rest of it, "not records we're all told are perfect day after day."...

I mean, it sounds like you do not believe the Beatles made any perfect albums... and do NOT want to hear anyone's opinion that they did.

However, my bad, and have a nice Tuesday.
