At least they knew it was likely going to be the end so they could attempt to end the series properly. I always get annoyed when series are cancelled and they never get a chance to resolve things.

You just need to read Annie Jacobsen's book about DARPA to realise that the government surveillance technology portrayed on this show pretty much does exist in real life.

No, when she was killed off in the series, she did a round of interviews where she said the producers told her up front that she was going to die in Season 3 or 4 and that it would be handled "dramatically and tastefully." She was very happy with the outcome and glad they at least didn't spring it on her as a surprise. What impressed me was that this was one of the rare character deaths in a TV series where there were reverberations and repercussions from it, and they talked about it for weeks afterward. That was surprisingly well done.

Taraji did have kind of an extended cameo as a "ghost" in an episode where Jim Caviezel was dying in a car after being wounded, and he imagined her ghost talking him through it and getting him to live. There was good acting by both actors on that one -- it was one of the better moments in the series.

Note that showrunner/co-creator Jonathan Nolan has had hard times lately: his new HBO series Westworld was shut down for rewrites and (apparently) retooling, so he's running into a lot of problems. I think the remaining 12 episodes of Person of Interest have been done for months and are just sitting on the shelf for CBS to eventually put on the schedule. I hope they don't forget about it. We have to make sure The Machine triumphs over Vigilance!

C'mon. The friggin' FBI can't even open up a single iPhone!

Read the book and you will understand. The FBI isn't DARPA.

You tell me why DARPA, the NSA, black ops, or anybody else can't open up the iPhone in real life. It's as if fiction is one thing and real-life is another.

Because they weren't intercepting, monitoring and archiving communications in real time in that particular case. They are trying to retrieve information stored on the phone after the fact. There is no way of getting around the 4 digit password that unlocks the phone. 10 wrong attempts and the phone automatically deletes all data on it. They obviously suspect the user stored data on there that didn't arrive via the phone's internet connection or cellular network. A such one would guess that parsing through the stored data at the NSA data farm didn't turn up what they were looking for.

Note that not long ago, Apple allowed increasing the number of digits to 12 on the iPhone password. And you can mix in both numerals and letters now, so the relative number of possible combinations goes up quite a few million. They say it would take over 200 years to come up with all the combinations just for 11 digits...

I'm just saying that people have unrealistic expectations as to what spies, government agents, and computer specialists can actually do in real life vs. what they do in the movies. This crap on TV creates the impression that everything is easy and everything happens quickly. Hell, even in Person of Interest they copied off all the files from The Machine in about an hour and walked out of the building with a big suitcase. Come the F on. This would be like somebody walking into Netflix or Apple and walking about with every online movie and piece of music ever made. It could be done, but it'd take months of file copying... and they'd notice somebody accessing those servers.

Totally correct. What's interesting is that even the former head of the NSA has recently come out in favor of Apple and end-to-end encryption as a net societal benefit, despite the obvious drawbacks. The iPhone encryption cannot be broken through traditional means, only by unlocking the phone with the correct passcode.

In general, I'm not a fan of Apple, but in this case, I support their decision to fight this precedent setting case. Either you have security or you don't - there is nothing in between (anyone remember the Clipper chip?).

Interesting that they canceled without even looking at the ratings for the shows in the can...

The shows in the can aren't out yet. The ones that aired last year were not doing well, but the ratings were steady. All broadcast TV ratings are down, big-time. In some cases, several dozen shows are down in the double-digits, which is bad news for traditional TV.

Well, this is lousy news. I really enjoyed this show. Maybe they would have kept it on CBS if the title was:

    CSI: Person Of Interest
    or
    Criminal Minds: Person Of Interest
    or
    Survivor: Person Of Interest

Maybe another network will pick it up, or even Netflix. It seems to be doing well on there

I'm disappointed, but perhaps the show has run its course. Good luck to the talented cast as they seek their next roles, and to Mr. Caviezel, you may have to speak up at your next audition.

What an ignominious end for such a great show-to be burned off in that purgatory between the proper TV season and the summer avalanche of crap. At least it won't have any competition, and in the cruelest irony, will probably win its timeslot.
