The "Us" remaster was a 100% improvement, all around, unless the old mix I bought was a bum CD or something. I couldn't believe how ****** it was. Especially for Peter Gabriel.
OK, so far I have I, II, and III in both Virgin UK/FR made, and early US made. The US is different in every case, consistently lower and more varied peaks. For IV I have a Virgin Holland, an early US made, and the US market WG made Target. All three differ. For So I only have the Virgin UK. Do we bother going newer then So?
Looks like we have some matches, PGCD3 Virgin/Charisma UK Nimbus: 95.5% 95.5% 37.1% 95.5% 95.5% 95.5% 95.5% 95.5% 43.5% 95.5% Same as bopdd's post above(same CD) PGCD4 (Security) Early Virgin/Charisma PGCD4 Blue Faced-West Germany Polygram (mid to late 80's press) 97.7 % 53.8 % 71.0 % 67.9 % 90.7 % 85.6 % 60.8 % 91.3 % Same as bopdd's post of the Made In Holland V/C CD found in another thread. PGCD5 (V-So) V/C EMI Black Triangle Japan 32VD-1021 100.0 % 100.0 % 100.0 % 100.0 % 100.0 % 90.4 % 100.0 % 100.0 % 100.0 % Same as Foobar2000's Nimbus UK CD above.
To clarify, I'm not the owner of the IV Made in Holland V/C. I took the information from another thread. It looks like the IV target and V/C have different masterings across the board. Wow, that's a lot of different masterings for this one album.
There sure is. I'm wondering which ones are just simply a level-shift in the mastering. I think the PGCD4 that was on the Charisma/Phonogram CD was the same as the Geffen Target CD. The mastering obviously changed when Virgin took over the distribution(like the Genesis catalog, but some of the Blue Faced CD's kept the older masterings). I'd like to see the EAC numbers for the Austrian picture discs of PGCD 1,2, and 3.

No problem indeed I do. It is interesting that it differs from the "Blue Face" I will have to compare then sound quality wise. Simon
Yes, the WG Charisma/Phonogram is different than the blue face Virgin/Charisma (which shares the same mastering as the other V/C discs).
The blueface is WG, I think. I don't have this disc, but I presume it's says Made in West Germany by Polygram, and is a Blue Faced CD. It's also a Virgin Charisma I guess.

So Various! Some "So readings I have in my logs So 32VD-1021 Japan 100/100/100/100/100/90.4/100/100/100 So Swindon EMI UK 75.8/75.8/75.8/75.8/75.8/68.6/75.8/75.8/75.8 So Austrian Same as 32VD So Nimbus UK Same as 32VD So Geffen Japan (JVC) Interesting 98.0/99.2/96.7/96.5/98.6/87.8/98.3/97.7/97.6 Simon
Cool. With the exception of the Geffen, they all look to be the same mastering (the Swindon being level shifted). I'm gonna assume the Geffen Japan is the same as the US. Once we confirm the latter, we can post the list again. I suppose we can separate the Swindon and the Nimbus pressings and note that it's probably a level shift.
The Austrian picture disc of PGCD 2 is the same as the V/C (in fact it basically IS a V/C - same label).
Hi, Sorry I should of made that clearer in my earlier post, the Japanese made disc I have is a Japan JVC pressing for the USA with art printed in the USA. As close as possible I reckon that the Swindon is just level shifted from the Nimbus (100/75.8) x 68.6 = 90.5 Simon
I went to the CD rack and checked. Must have sold a couple of SACD's besides 'So' to get the Black Triangles instead. I have I, II, Us and Up left as SACD. So 32VD-1021 has already been listed above so here are: III (Melt) 32VD-1081 - same as V/C 95.5 / 95.5 / 37.1 / 95.5 / 95.5 / 95.5 / 95.5 / 95.5 / 43.5 / 95.5 and IV (Security) 32VD-1014 - different mastering from V/C 100 / 55.1 / 72.7 / 69.5 / 92.8 / 87.6 / 62.2 / 93.5 Ein Deutsches Album - Virgin/Charisma xcdscd 4019 [Nimbus UK] - different mastering from V/C Holland xx / 95.5 / 95.5 /95.5 / 95.5 / 95.4 / 95.5 / 26.6 / 92.7 (I'm getting a read error on track 1 of my Deutsches Album)
Just to clairfy, the V/C PGCD4 Blue Faced CD I have is a West German PDO pressing. I have the U.S. SRC Geffen pressing of So, and if IIRC, it may have matched the PGCD5 Black Triangle, and the Geffen JVC Japan for U.S. was the same mastering, but shifted down in level a little. I'll dig them out for confirmation, and post the results soon.
