Peter Wyngarde - RIP

The king of cool has passed away. He was so much a part of my childhood with a host of roles in television, cropping up in The Saint, The Avengers, The Prisoner, you name it - and most notably his role as Jason King in Department S which spawned a series of his own in that role.
RIP

 

He's great in The Night of the Eagle and menacing in The Innocents - almost like watching a different actor.

He also played Timanov in the Doctor Who story "Planet of Fire."

 

He's a bit before my time but I recognized the character he played in Flash Gordon. RIP.

 

His face did seem to turn up in all kinds of places, even X-Men comic books! A telly icon has left us. I know he must've been because he had his own fanclub.

 

RIP Peter, sad news.

I just finished watching The Avengers episode he was in on Sunday...and mid-December rewatched The Complete Prisoner Series.

 

When he came to Australia to do the play Butley in the 70s he got into all manner of trouble. Most of which seems to have avoided internet scrutiny.

 

The Guardian ran a pretty brutal obit that hints at the sort of thing you are alluding to.

 

Yeah, that Guardian obit is awful. Sounds like the writer had some kind of issue with him. Didn't expect that of a newspaper like that.

I love Peter in Department S, Jason King and also his appearances in The Prisoner, The Avengers and many others.

Was discussing this in another forum. There's definitely got to be more than meets the eye here - none of the author's other obits for the Guardian display anywhere close to the amount of spite he expended on Wyngarde.

For once, the admonition "don't read the comments" doesn't apply here - my favorite one was "One can only imagine penning this obituary has saved its author the trouble of going along to the cemetery and urinating onto its subject's grave."
