Tom Petty's music always had a fast-food effect on me. You always knew what it was gonna be like, it wasn't gonna be awful, or great, and it had no nutritional value whatsoever. In five minutes it would be over and in an hour you'd forget it ever happened.
Learning a rock n roller was on heroin is about as surprising as learning a Hollywood celebrity had botox.

This kind of bums me out but isn't that unexpected. It seems he is prone to depression and untreated that leads to some weird dark places. I give him major kudos for coming out the other side.

Now write, record and tour because I need some new Petty I can criticize and I have yet to see him live.

I don't really know. I just thought it was interesting because he's a band guy, and not one of these Anthony Bozza types whose written a million of these things.

I want to revisit my earlier comment. After consulting wiki, I see that Tom made one of my favorite albums of his in 1994: the soundtrack to She's The One. I don't think that his problem caused him to lose focus of his music, but it definitely changed the direction of the music.
Looking back at it now, I wonder how he survived and Howie didn't?

The guy is human, he's lived his life on his own terms. He can't be faulted for that.

Better judgement, eh?! Is that not a bit condescending?

Good question. He made one of my favorite records with Rubin, Wildflowers (I've been waiting for it's vinyl reissuing patiently).

I believe this is actually the second time this has been put down in print. Petty gave an interview a few years back detailing having to move out of his house and his drug use at the time. It wasn't a widely circulated article though so I'm not surprised this is the first that many are hearing of it. Anyhow going back as far as the late 90s it was pretty evident to any number of people that there were these issues with drugs but there was also the mentality at the time among the fanbase that those sorts of things weren't to be discussed publicly by the fanbase because "it made the band look bad". That is how I remember it anyhow.

Also in terms of TP stealing the name "Heartbreakers" for his band. It wasn't his idea anyhow. Petty preferred the moniker "Tom Petty & Nightro" and the band actually performed a few gigs under that name. A short while after that Denny Cordell suggested renaming the band "The Heartbreakers" due to the fact that the band contained several uniquely good looking guys.

Wait a second... There's a new Tom Petty bio coming out?

Bit of buzz... Could this mean a reissue campaign may be next ;)

Why would you think this was a good topic for a thread? Is this the high times forum or a place to talk about music? If you want to share your own drug habits with the forum it would not be on topic, but it would at least be more appropriate than discussing someone elses.

As far as I know, only Damn The Torpedoes, The Live Anthology, Mojo, and Hypnotic Eye have been released on Hi-Res discs.

@nbakid2000 great topic for a thread by the way

I'm just glad this thread wasn't about your own personal drug habits. That'd be inappropriate. Lol :D

Last time I'll post here about it, I don't wanna jack the thread, but I think I might spring for the box set if it actually happens.

That being said, knowing how artists and labels like to create buzz when releasing stuff this seems like a great time to reveal an upcoming vinyl reissue of all the albums, or a box set of some sort... I'm sure they're aware of how well they might sell
