Being born in 1958, PLUS I'm currently alternating between Leave It To Beaver and The Twilight Zone on DVD, and Blu ray respectively, I've really gotten a kick out of this thread. I'm on season 2 of Beaver, and was wondering what was up with the exteriors of the house ? Now I know ! .

Buddy Ebsen test shots for The Wizard Of Oz. Ebsen began shooting in the Tin Man role but had a severe allergic reaction to the aluminum dust in the silver make-up. He was hospitalized and quietly replaced on the film by Jack Haley, who was not told why Ebsen left the production and did not learn the reason until many years later.
I remember seeing that second picture in a book on the 50th anniversary of the film in 1989 when I was 10 years old and freaked out by it. All these years later I still am. I am sorry what happened to Buddy happened, but I am glad they did not go with make-up test #1!
