Does anyone know the definative version of this album or is there one? I have the chance to purchase two different variations and I could use the help. First is the UK version CDEMD1078 and the domestic C2K67064. Is there a sonic difference?
I still prefer the LP set... but I haven't heard my CD set for a long time. Claus @Mastering Lab during the LP mastering for P.U.L.S.E.
Why do you prefer the LP set? Are they not the same mastering? Or do you have a better TT setup? Or is it because you did it.....??
A LP mastering differs from a CD mastering... Doug Sax, Gavin Lurssen and James Guthrie started the LP mastering a couple weeks after the CD mastering. I have purchased the CD/LP set at that time, and I prefered the vinyl... sounds smoother than the CD... I just bought the CD set for the light on the box... looked pretty cool. My tt setup is absolutely on the "higher end"... I'm using a Well Tempered Lab Signature and a Lyra Parnassua DCt cartridge (very expensive stuff... it costs about $ 3200 for the cartridge only!)... I only can speak in comparison against my Krell CD player... haven't purchased a SACD player yet.
It's out of print, but not sold out... I have seen some copies at my record dealer. Very nice packing... and a hardcover book.
Without giving away any professional secrets, can you please give some details on your work on the album? I remember being surprised when the CD liner notes stated the album was recorded on analogue multi-track. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks... John Vancouver, BC
Whoops.. I mis-read some of the earlier posts in the thread. I'd still like to hear about your visit though! Thanks...
I have no idea how it compares to the CD or LP, but my laserdisc sounds phenomenal. Several tracks are different though, like the LD has One of These Days, but the CD has Astronomy Domine among a few others. I'm hoping this one comes to DVD with a DTS track - to remind me of the concert I saw in New Orleans for that tour. BTW, cdnow.com has the vinyl for this one for about $43. Joel
I have the US version on CD. It seems to be a lush recording....generally on the warm side of neutral...I'm pretty pleased with it. But, no, sorry never compared the UK version with it. The early UK versons had a flashing red light on the case...I remember going into the record shop once, sorting through the P Floyd CD's and thinking there was a security camera watching me in these Pulse cases!
Supposedly its in the works, but who knows when it'll actually come out. I have the laserdisc too. In fact just watched the Dark Side portion the other night. Great video!
I'd really like to see Pink Floyd Live at Pompeii on DVD. It was proposed at one time, but something about the tapes couldn't be found to mix in surround or something...
Dave, get the "flashing light" version for sure! I think there is still a sealed copy across the street from me. If not, there is definitely a used copy there. $29.99. I think. Then, like me, take out the batteries so they don't leak inside the case!
