Looks like old new stock. It's as clean as you'll find. Still, not worth the price of a car. Amazing that people used to throw things like this away.

    I've got a Pioneer SX980. It's terrific.

This is the top of the line of the SX series. Still, this really is insanity. You'd never be able to get much more than 2k in resale value. There's some strange ego-driven bidding war.

I’ve seen these go in the $5k range, but $26,200? Wow.

For the same money a brand new pair of Mcintosh mc2301's could be bought with $4G's left over for a decent preamp. I have a hard time believing this auction is for real

Wow. There's definitely a premium being paid for it's condition. I don't think I've ever seen a non restored vintage amp with no rust on the grill for sale. lol

Could be a couple of crazies bidding. It'll be interesting to see if this returns as a relisting after the winner balks at paying that high of a price.

I inherited a vintage Breitling wrist watch from around 1970, and the dang thing sold for over $11,000 on ebay!

Not sure why you're saying that. Lesser examples of SX-1980s have been regularly changing hands for far more than $2K for some time now.

Obviously someone's looking to fulfill a dream who is lucky enough to have the means of achieving it who is unconcerned about the cost. This should be celebrated as it bodes well for the state of the vintage hi fi hobby, 1) for the support it brings in keeping vintage units in good repair and 2), providing jobs/income for those who provide it.

When prices start falling through the floor is when we should be worried, not the reverse. :)

I saw this several times on FB and thought it was a joke-meme.

  13. I would love to see pix, being a watch guy too.

And I'd never bid in a auction with hidden bidders.

Here you go. I should also say, I let it run several times for a day or so, and it kept perfect time.

I’ve had bidding wars between a couple of Ebayers drive up some used CD prices to MUCH more than I was expecting to get for them. That being said, $26k is a bit much.
Even the TOTL Sansui G-33000 is only going for $19,950. :D

Wow, I wonder if my repair guy has seen this. He has/had (not sure but I've seen it) an SX-1980 in equivalent condition with the original box in better shape than the one in the listing.

Are these along with a pile of original RL LZ II's the new retirement plan?

Probably shill bidding. One of the shill accounts entered in a much higher price than they meant to.

True. The sellers listings are private as well so you can't see even masked bidder names.

Yowza, for that kind of dough I'd be looking at the Pioneer Exclusive line from the early 1990s

Yes. I mean I love my SX-980. It's one step down from this one at $26k. So, can I get like 12K for it? Okay, I'll take 5k. Any takers?

Didn't realize they went for more than 2K. You're right, I'm sure. But not 26K. Although I should test the market with my near mint SX-980. I've seen that one on sale for as much as 1K.

And I just read that there is little punishment from Ebay in such cases.
