Which do you prefer -- the 1977 British debut, or the U.S. version released two years later?

    UK track list:
    Janie Jones
    Remote Control
I'm So Bored with the USA
    White Riot
    Hate & War
    What's My Name?
    Deny
    London's Burning
    Career Opportunities
    Cheat
    Protec Blue
    Police & Thieves
    48 Hours
    Garageland

    US track list:
    Clash City Rockers
I'm So Bored with the USA
    Remote Control
    Complete Control
    White Riot
    White Man in Hammersmith Palais
    London's Burning
    I Fought the Law
    Janie Jones
    Career Opportunities
    What's My Name?
    Hate & War
    Police & Thieves
    Jail Guitar Doors
    Garageland

FWIW, Robert Christgau prefers the UK, Dave Marsh the US.

I almost always choose UK versions, as it's the way it was intended.

I'm also not crazy about the song "Clash City Rockers."

The UK album is an ALBUM. The US version is a compilation.

US absolutely, and that is the 2nd greatest punk record of all time. :)

I might get drawn and quartered for this, but - US. Deny, Protex Blue, Cheat, and 48 Hours are all fillerish tracks to me (and I prefer the re-recorded White Riot).

I mean, I'd own both. I just like ALL of the tracks on the US version.

The US version has better songs for sure. The UK version arguably has better flow.

Each has its strengths and drawbacks. This is why I have neither and listen instead to disc 1 of Clash on Broadway.

I chose the US just because I've never heard the UK. Plus it has "I Fought The Law."

Should we continue this thread or go to the earlier one? I'm OK either way. UK won (or was winning) that other one, btw.

As someone else has posted, the UK version usually seems to win here, so I'm surprised at the support for the U.S. version on this thread. I always vote U.S. for the inclusion of White Man in Hammersmith Palais. Such a fantastic song, I could never choose against it.

The US version for being a stronger set of songs overall, and because having grown up in the US, that's the version I'm more accustomed to.

  21. Was "I Fought the Law" on the original US vinyl? I don't remember it bring on there.

Anyway, I second Thoutah's comments - the US is preferred because it's a better set of songs overall and the one I'm more familiar with (the above caveat noted).

It's news to me that I have the U.S. version, and that their are versions.

The US doesn't count because it is a compilation that happens to have the same artwork and title as the first Clash album;)

  24. I appreciate the historical fact that the U.K. version is what it really was/is, & how was both intended, & actually happened...and the U.S. is something more cobbled together.
But... as a collection of song they share 10 incredible songs: Janie Jones, I'm So Bored With The U.S.A., Remote Control, London's Burning, Hate & War, Police & Thieves, White Riot, Career Opportunities, What's My Name & Garageland
And then you've got to simply compare the 4 songs unique to the U.K. version vs. the 5 unique to the U.S. version... operationally, while it's not a rout (as the U.K. version has 4 terrific songs), there's no question for me that the 5 U.S. songs are just out & out the better crop here. And I grew up with the U.S. version too.

(U.S.)- Clash City Rockers, Complete Control, White Man In Hammersmith Palais, Jail Guitar Doors & I Fought The Law > (U.K.)- Deny, Cheat, Protex Blue, & 48 Hours.
