Turntable and cart, if you must. Added an arm? Yeah, that's valid. Let's not include cables and phono stages and preamps and amps and speakers... And then what, how much it cost you to remodel your basement?

    Just turntable.

So true man, I bought a Koetsu a few years ago, had to try one, worth every penny, but I could afford it then.
When it needs replacing, it still has some life left, I am already working out what I can sell. I can't go back, no way.

  7. What's the average life of a moving coil these days and can they not be re-tipped? I'm beginning to regret buying the Cadenza Black now!

Some of these things get so expensive, you wind up calculating your cost per play on records, based on life expectancy!

Yes there a number of re-tipping places there are three, or four that I know of in the UK. moving coils in general last about three years average use, whatever that is.
Ortofon have their own service very reasonable.
With Koetsu you can re-tip but sending back to the manufacturer is the best way. they charge 45 percent, though Koetsus last a long time. Longer than average.

  10. Thank you for this. I assume "average use" means 1-2 hours a day and therefore regular use. I haven't been counting but I've used my table much less frequently than that so I guess I'm good for 5-6 years?

Yes seems about right, makes the pleasure of using a top cartridge very reasonable, and to me it is the most important part of my system.

A bargain but why would you sell a quality cartridge, the transducer, the bit that makes everything worthwhile.

I sort of regret it now, but the cartridge was MC and I didn't want to invest in a step-up transformer or a new pre.

I hear you. I have a Koetsu Black since 100 playing hours and it is really starting to sing now, even if my hi-fi guru says that after 200 hours I will get the best out of it. I don't know how it can get better, my friends' jaws are dropping any time they visit and I too am still wondering if a Koetsu is 100% legal or not.

About ten years ago I bought a used Denon DP-59L for $80 at an estate sale in beautiful physical and functional condition. Still use it.

    What a steal.

  23. Got a Technics SL-1210MKII off eBay for $225.00 a few years ago and later changed the arm to a Jelco 750. The cartridge is a Denon DL-103r with a hardwood body. Total cost was just under a grand.

  24. Bought it 39 some years ago for $300 or so then.
