Please choose your "Least Favorite Decade for Music"

    Hey everybody,

I'm no expert in posting polls, but I'll give it another shot. This one is the result of another Thread, but if I just list which Thread it is, it might unfairly skew the voting. If you're really interested I'm sure you can figure it out, but it's not necessary as far as making a choice in this Poll is concerned. So far everybody has been civil in this other Thread, and there's no reason for it not to stay that way, although there are strong opinions on both sides. One of the participants wanted to post a Poll but had some difficulty, I was asked to take a shot at it, so here goes.

I didn't want to be "negative", and I don't want to give anyone a "hard time" about the type of music they may like (not even about "Rap", Grant :D ). As far as I'm concerned, most of the people here on this Forum like music a lot more than the average person, and that's something we all share in common.

So I thought about asking the Poll Question as "Best Decade for Music?" but I thought too many people would split between the 1960's and 1970's. "Worst Decade for Music?" was the only way I could think to word the question so that the most people would have a clear or simple choice (not to mention that the original idea for the Poll title was in fact "What was the worst decade for music?").

I did read that a few people have expressed a certain "sadness" that one particular decade seems to be not particularly well thought of by some, I'm not meaning to make anyone sad or unhappy. I've never been accused of being an overly sensitive "type", but I don't have any interest in contributing any sadness to the world either, there's plenty of that already. I much prefer to give people a reason to smile, when the opportunity presents itself ("class clown" and all that kinda stuff :))

So I opted for the title "Least Favorite Decade for Music?" instead. "Worst" implies that there was a bad decade, and there was some good music in every decade, so "Least Favorite" might be a kinder way for people to express that they prefer music from an era other than the era which gets the most votes in this Poll.

Have I said that nicely enough? I hope so. I am trying... :agree:

Okay, here goes...let's see if I can make this work on the first try...not likely, but we'll see :D

60s were fab, 70s began dodgily but then there was punk/new wave that was gear, can't remember much about the 80s, the 90s had a load of indie bands that were brill.

It's late folks (or early, depending on who you talk to), I voted the 60's. However, I read the poll wrong! If I could change my vote, it would be the 90's!!! With the 80's a very, very close second!

I liked some of the early 80's stuff but pretty much dropped out of the music scene around 1986. I was turned off by the digital sound of artists such as Madonna. I was also pretty unhappy with all the keyboard based bands with drum machines. I got back into things in the early 90's after hearing Nirvana on SNL and consequently liked much of the alternative music of that decade.

Of course I loved the 60's and much of the 70's.

I voted for 90's. I don't hate it, but I'm more selective about it than any other decade.

I'm surprised there are so many votes for the 90's. Don't you guys remember Nirvana? Kurdt Cobain, man! He was, like, our John Lennon!

What were you listening to in the 80's?

I know some people see the 80's as the decade of hair metal and Eurosynth. If you're not familiar with REM, Camper Van Beethoven, Meat Puppets, Talking Heads, Soft Boys/Robyn Hitchcock & the Egyptians, Replacements, Roy Loney & the Phantom Movers, Tom Waits, Elvis Costello & the Attractions, Chameleons, XTC, The Church, Pixies, The Smiths, Wire, Gang of Four, Dream Syndicate, Nick Lowe, Pretenders, Jam/Style Council, Glenn Branca, The Cure, Stone Roses, Prince, Nick Cave, X, Minutemen, Squeeze, Ramones, Band of Susans, Mission of Burma, Soul Asylum, Siouxsie & the Banshees, Sonic Youth, Throwing Muses, Husker Du, Echo & the Bunnymen, Graham Parker, Mekons, Pogues, Eurythmics, etc. you missed the 80's. It's not too late to catch up. The 80's was a great decade!

Well, if you don't like hard rock you won't like most of these but I like Tool, Radiohead, Nine Inch Nails, Soundgarden, Rage Against The Machine, Wilco, Jayhawks, Jellyfish, Marvelous 3, Bjork. That's off the top of my head and I'm too lazy to look up more. :)

Hey, I just noticed that "the 1980's" is italicized in the poll. Is that some kind of subliminal suggestive device designed to skew the results in an unfair manner? I like it. :D

  17. I chose the 90's simply because I can. How can anyone pick the 80's as least favorite? puhtoosh

    Hey Mike,

I noticed the same thing too (1980's italicized) on my screen. I thought that just meant it was the "response" with the most votes at first (it did have the most responses, earlier) but now it is still italicized even though the 1990's currently has the most votes...

So, my next hypothesis is that whichever of the 4 choices you voted for shows up as being italicized only on your screen as a way to remind you what you voted for...

I went out of my way to try to prevent skewing the results in an unfair manner, so it definitely was not intentional on my part...

If I have this wrong, or if I can "edit" it and fix it, somebody let me know and I'll take care of it. :righton:

    Oh, I almost forgot...

    Hi Dave,

Thanks for correcting Joe's vote to accurately reflect his clearly intended choice, in order to maintain the integrity of the Poll :righton:
