    Excuse me, should

be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?

"Despite contentions that their sound was "too soft" to fall under the definition of rock and roll,
major campaigns and petitions exist toward inducting Carpenters in the the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame."

    From here.

well I'm a huge Carpenters fan but there ought to be different HOFs for different styles of music, so I voted no.

The rock guitar solo at the end of Goodbye to Love is as good as anything most members of the RnRHoF manage in a career. And it definitely rocks.

Sure. Complaints about who is in are a lot funnier than complaints about who is not.

So I guess that categorizes them as a rock band.

I doubt the Carpenters though of themselves as "Rock" so I would say no.

I don't think so. They were great, and culturally relevant, but they were not in the spotlight long and their success wasn't of the commercially-impossible-to-ignore scale of the RnRHOF's lighter-fare entrants, like the Bee Gees or ABBA. It's not strictly a rock music hall of fame, but it has a understandable built-in bias there that would leave out otherwise worthy entrants such as The Carpenters, Olivia Newton-John, Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass, John Denver, etc.

Karen Carpenter did have one of pop music's greatest voices.

If Chicago and Yes can't be included. The Carpenters can go fly a kite.

I just wanted to add, if pop music acts have to be included, the Carpenters and Bread deserve to be in more than half the acts that are already in. Chicago also.

Whoops I forgot to say Chicago Transit Authority should be added. Certaintly not pop. I still hate that Chicago turned into a Pop band. And can't forget Terry Kath most underrated rock guitar player of all time.

If Lobo and David Geddes got in already, I don't know why The Carpenters is such a big deal.

They may not fit everyone's definition of rock, but neither do Johnny Cash, the Bee Gees, and Grandmaster Flash, and IMO, they all deserve their place in it. The Carpenters were actually quite influential in ushering in a "soft rock" sound in an era of hard rock. For that, I say they should be inducted. But then, I also think Pat Boone should be in it.

  20. Based on talent and quality of music, definitely.

Based on appropriateness to the category of "rock and roll", I don't know. What used to be called "rock and roll" essentially hasn't existed since the 1950s.

  21. We all have our favorites that aren't inducted (mine are The Monkees). I think we should stick to the topic.

No. They didn't really make any important contributions to rock and roll. Wonderful duo though.
