I'd be very surprised if those plain white inners were the originals.

There's another aspect of this specimen that I don't believe has been mentioned. Look at the cover and note how the green rectangle (from STEREO on the spine) extends beyond the fold onto the front cover. The extension is much more pronounced than I've ever seen on an early pressing. In fact, it looks exactly like this 1975 reissue with 75 Rock label and Warner bubble:

Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin II

Yet another indicator of the likelihood of this being a mid 70s reissue.

No, it's the Atlantic "7 rows" inner sleeve, like so:

Would this x-ray machine thingy show the "7 rows" inner sleeve? Hmm...

Why would they have to go back to the multitracks? Is it one of those unspoken but known things that the Zeppelin II master tape is no more or in poor condition?

From what I understand Classic Records did not use the master tape.

From reports the MFSL vinyl that used the master tape has faults that point to it being an issue with the master. I've never heard this version.

I don't think lukpac, laservampire or other forensic music ( :) ) members have said anything wrong with the source on the II remaster. Of course if Diament used the same tape as Page/Davis then there isn't much else digital reference to go by for source comparisons so this might be why.

There was an EVSD boot a few years ago that compiled multis for roughly half of the tracks. They sounded pretty good, obviously that doesn't help in trying to recreate the full original album :)

If there is anything additional I've missed please add to it.

It wouldn't. An x-ray is quite a crude machine by modern standards like MRI (not to say a spiral x-ray aka CT can't do things that MRI can, purely speaking about the technology), it's basically just looking at variations in tissue/fluid density. No medical imaging technology could do what is being asked.

Pretty sure they were. The people I bought them from were not switching inner sleeves on their records. Others have also said they've had RLs in white inners. I've had several and they were all the same type of white inner.

That is definitely something really stood out to me at first as well. The issue I have is that it is so hard to find a crisp sleeve to compare to.
Just a quick search on ebay and I found this RL that the green stereo box is wrapped around: LED ZEPPELIN II ROBERT LUDWIG LP Atlantic ATL-SD 8236 USA | eBay

Then again another one that is a non-RL that is wrapped around as well: Led Zeppelin II (2) LP SD 8236 | eBay

Some have mentioned making a movie that includes how the RL became famous and the work done to determine if it was an RL without opening it. This reminds me of the PBS show "Nova" episode in which a guy bought, what he feels, is an unknown Da Vinci. Interesting detective work. Interesting 1 hr show. Anyone see it? I think the guy already turned down 15 mil.

FWIW, my RL SS with original sleeve weighs 405 grams. I have found that RLs come in heavier than the other pressings (anecdotal evidence). The record itself feels very similar to today's 180g records

Are you referring to the green wrap stereo on the lp decal in the center of the record?
