  1. Had a great place on Florida Street with a wonderful top floor room. But is was the perfect time to move on....

Hi Timind-- I notice you're listening on the diagonal. I've thought of that in my room, as there is a serious bass null along the midline. How does it work for you? --Mike

P.S. I like the slate rack! Heavy gear is a trip as we age. I had personal trainer from the local gym help me move my subs around. Even when I don't have a sore elbow, they are ridiculous to move. So keep on the good side of your grandson!

Ahh... just testing - copied this pic from my PhotoBucket site. Easy...now that I've tried it. :righton: My Martin Logan sub (500), on a small stool, platform, from Bed-Bath & Beyond.

    Thanks for the comments.

My room is a near perfect square. The speakers were previously on one wall in a standard configuration. With the Time and phase coherent Thiels I expected a deep and wide soundstage. There was plenty of width but very little depth in the standard setup. I read a thread here which recommended the diagonal config so I thought why not try it.

My grandson and moved the rack (and I should have centered it then) over so I could set the speakers up diagonally. From the very first song the improvement was amazing; not just in image depth either. The bass seemed much tighter along with clarity and definition. Another advantage with this setup is that it allowed me to sit the required 8 feet from the Thiels. This is necessary for proper driver integration.

It may be somewhat speaker dependent as I have used three different speakers in this set up with varied results. First were the Thiels with excellent results. Next was a pair of Magnepan 12QRs which also worked better in this configuration. Lastly I used a pair of Soliloquy 5.0 monitors with little improvement. Not that the Soliloquys sounded bad in this configuration, just that there was little improvement in their excellent imaging and soundstage. Not sure why.

If you have a square room and the freedom to move equipment, I highly recommend you give it a try. Nothing to lose.

As for my grandson, I bought him a car this summer, a beater but better than walking, so we're good.

Not my pic, but I've moved to these Behringer 2031ps for it's flat frequency response and relatively wide dispersion, and price point/value @ sale price. Magnepans sold cause toddler.:

In graph #1, 2031p is the top line. They are the "after" stuffing ports with cotton measurement, the bottom is before.:

Wow, BrainWash is still there? I played a gig there in '90 or '91! That's down in SOMA, right?

  25. Oh wow. I didn't realize there was a Sightglass other than the one by my place.
