It's nobody else's favorite, but I loved the one with Chris Evert, playing herself, after retiring from tennis trying out various activities. No matter what she does or where she does it, Martina Navratilova, played by Nora Dunn, pops up and bests her at it.

I was impressed how they wrote such a funny sketch around a non-actor. In the same vein, I also got a kick out of the Elvis movie parody they did when Wayne Gretzky hosted called "Hockey Waikiki" and the "McCain sings Streisand" commercial with the real John McCain.

    Regards,

That was a great episode. Isn't that the same one where Sting was in an elevator with Dana Carvey and Kevin Nealon and they kept singing his songs to him? Great stuff.

So many classics I can't even think of them, so I'll go (fairly) current.

Anyone see the "Cork Soakers" skit, about the winery where they show the tourists how the corks get soaked?

I was fairly young when this episode was broadcast. Either 8th
    grade or 9th...

Staying up late to watch (any) show was somewhat new to me
and it was a freedom I started to enjoy... usually with my
    dad in attendance.

I remember when Elvis Costello was introduced that night.

In part because his name was unique (if you can forget
about Presley for a second - LOL)... and partly because he
looked odd... I remember thiking that he looked like
a punk rock version of Buddy Holly...

I must have been talking to my father as Costello played.
I don't remember the famous false start - and the
music didn't really register with me either...

But what I *DO* recall was the way the band dropped
their instruments and walked off the stage angry.

I had never seen anything like it.

And "palpable" is the correct word. I didn't know
about the disagreement with Michaels concerning
song selection... all I knew was this band seemed
to have something more important on their mind
than hanging around to wait for applause.

I suspect you're right about the applause being
    added later.

I had the episode saved on my TIVO until
the harddrive crashed a few months back.

I'm fairly certain what I had saved was
a one hour condensed version of the 90
    minute broadcast... The edited version
of what was the 1977 christmas episode
    was somehow toned down... probably
    because someone added some canned
    applause - as you suggested.

Most of the syndicated versions are an hour, as opposed to the full 90. Also, Lorne has not been above liberally editing the shows, including sometimes swapping sketches for the rehearsal versions...mostly for the later seasons.

I just watched the youtube clip referenced above.

That looks like what I had on my TIVO.

I noticed there's a DVD box with musical performance highlights that
includes the Costello performance. I'm guessing that the clip on it
looks like what is seen on the youtube clip.

Watching it - its fairly clear that Lorne Michaels sweetened the moment by
adding in canned applause after the fact. Its not consistent with
what I witnessed live back in 1977. I dont remember the dead
silence - but I trust that's what happened. I remembering thinking
to myself "What the h-*-l-l just happened?!?!?!"

Phil Hartman in the sketch where he portrayed Reagan as a bumbling president meeting a girl scout for the most cookies sold Then as soon as she leaves, he's got his cabinet members back in the room and he's calling all the shots.

Belushi in the film where he was an old man visiting his departed fellow cast members graves

    Sprockets..."Pet my Monkey!"

Eddie Murphy (as Stevie Wonder) and Joe Piscopo (as Frank Sinatra) singing "Ebony and Ivory" "I am black and you are white", "You're as blind as a bat"

By most accounts, Lorne was standing there fuming when Elvis busted out "Radio, Radio." I'm not sure what happened after Elvis left the stage, but I'm guessing it was not pretty.

To paraphrase Elvis, they may not have been happy about the incident, but they sure seem to have enjoyed re-running it a billion times.

A few of my favorite skits that come to mind were Eddie Murphy sings, "Buckwheat" and Chevy Chase playing President Ford.

  20. I loved almost everything skit that had Phil Hartman or Chris Farley in them. Phil's Frank Sinatra was killer. He was funny, funny. From more recent episodes I loved when Will Farrell played Neil Diamond. Hilarious. :D

My comedy idols, from BOB AND RAY, JANE, LARAINE & GILDA. I still have the VHS version of the show which B&R sold.

For those who don't know, Bob Elliott is the father of Chris. For starters, there'd be no Phil Hendrie without Bob & Ray.
