can anyone recommend some decent headphones under £200 (over ear/closed back)? I've got the open back Sennheiser 598's but for practical reasons of sharing my home with a puppy & a baby I'd like some closed back too! Been looking at Audio Technica MSR7s, but interested to hear from anyone with other brands they'd recommend.

These are purely for home, hifi listening (Marantz) not portable

I like the Sony MDR1A but I use it on the go only.

ATH-m40x sound incredible and are fairly cheap. They're really relaxed and detailed with a balanced/neutral sound signature.

Sennheiser 201 HD fit your description. These headphones have a neutral/ balanced sound signature. You might want to buy more comfortable pads from the start. Although they become more comfortable after wearing the them for a while and *breaking in* the clamp and pads. YMMV.

Beyerdynamic DT770 around £100 absolutely love mine...you can pick them up really cheap second hand and just get replacement ear pads...great sound and no leakage I replaced exactly the same Sennheiser's your using with them

It has been a while but AKG has some excellent items that meet your needs. I would certainly check on them.

Looking online the ATH M50x are everywhere, are there discernable differences between these and the 40s? I've been going by TrustedReviews so will check out the other models recommended too

If you want a little bass boost, Audio Technica
If you want a big bass boost V Moda
if you want a brighter sound Beyer.

Avoid Sennheiser, I don't think they make good closed headphones.

If it were my money I'd get Beyer DT1350 or maybe VModa XS
The DT1350 is still the best sounding on ear portable

Thank you, I presume you mean with a positivity and are not grumpy because someone has a different opinion than you :)
What about comfort, isolation and the occlusion effect?

If we all liked the same thing, the world would be a boring place, I am genuinely glad you have headphones
you like, often it takes people a while to find them,
I love Beyer closed cans, but some think they are too bright, but to me they are flatter than most,
all of our ears and brains are different, head-fi is a very personal thing.

Occlusion? that's a new word to me.
