I'm interested in the Robert Johnson set - I'm wondering if it will have a follow-up standard release without the exclusive poster (which I don't care about anyway)

Yikes!!! I wouldn't go that far, but maybe an atomic wedgie, and loogey in the eye would suffice! ;)

I've been thinking about getting to my favorite shop at 5a.m. I'm glad my nephew's coming with me. I don't want to share in the experience alone. :(

Printing out copies of the list because people in line always borrow mine. I also made poundcake to share with people. I'm like the den mother of RSD.

The chain in those handcuffs is high-tensile steel. It'd take you ten minutes to hack through it with a copy of Cracked Actor vinyl. Now, if you're lucky, you could hack through your ankle in five minutes. Go.

This is totally true, and I am trying to work out how RSD saves record stores...it only seems to be a good business deal for EBay. But Mrs oldturkey & myself are trying to commit to waking up early tomorrow, at the moment 6am is the most extreme we can get. It'll probably be 8am. People are already queueing up according to various internet sites. There are plenty of dedicated RSD junkies out there.

  14. I wrote this on the Facebook wall of a record shop in Sydney that I go to and like: for Record Store Day 2017, I plan to spend about five hours or so laying in a bed at the Wollongong Hospital's Renal Unit's Haemodialysis room, just like I did for the last five Record Store Days. I often visit my local record store but I am expected to turn up at a certain day of the year to spend ****loads of money I don't have on products that I don't really want. I loved the idea at first - and I know this is hardly your fault - but now it is as commercialised as Christmas and not even as fun! Well, I tell you what, I hope that you have a great day. I will be sound asleep and then hopefully visiting my local record shop [in Wollongong, not in Sydney] on the way home as they have extended trading hours tomorrow and I'll get in [to this shop in Sydney] when I can!

(For non-local readers, which is nearly everybody here, it is a 100 minute trip by train from Wollongong to Sydney)
(And, yes, some of it I do want, but it is so limited, why should I turn up at 5AM when I can't turn up anyway, just to buy stuff I can't afford that day anyway?)

umm all the stuff on eBay was bought at a local record store so this statement makes no sense.

Heading to Rough Trade tomorrow and getting up at 8am. Only have three items on my list, but if I don't get any of them I won't be too bothered as they're not essential. Pretty confident I'll get two of them though.

    I'm in for -

    Elastica LP
    Placebo 12"
    Jamiroquai 10"

Last year I got up at 5:30am. Glad I'm not getting up ridiculously early this year!

    Yep.

If they want to prevent flipping, they have to make enough product to meet demand. That's the only way the prices will come down. So far this year, I haven't noticed anything too outrageously limited (like a multiplatinum act having only a pressing of 100 or 200 items), so hopefully we can all get what we want at a fair price.

It makes sense because the very fact that people are debating whether to bother queuing up overnight for limited editions means that a lot of people aren't going to. It means that the record shops could sell more records but not to those people who won't put themselves through the inconvenience. Yet the queue probably has a number of EBay scalpers who are going to buy stuff they don't want just to resell at a huge mark up. OK, so the record shop has sold some records to EBay scalpers. Well done - I hope that sustains them for a year until the next RSD.
If they sold quality product of recordings people don't already have instead of limited coloured vinyl presses then maybe they'd stay in business.

Well, well, well: I'd like to think the Placebo is essential. While you can always get an older pressing of "Elastica", "Without You I'm Nothing featuring David Bowie" was never released on vinyl. And I love that version.

BTW: Does the new "Elastica" come with "Elasticatalogue"?

As for getting up early: Thank God we don't have that tradition in Germany. Well.... at least not for RSD:angel:

The most interesting store opens at 8 and I don't think people will line up before 7. Since I have my four favourite titles on preorder through Amazon I'm undecided when to go. I'm an early riser so.. who knows. In the end I might end up having all four twice.

I thought I would add this link to a Record Store Day story that I wrote for this week's issue of The Maine Edge (an arts & entertainment weekly). It features an interview with Chris Brown of Bull Moose, the person who conceived of RSD in 2007. Chris's original emails to Michael Kurtz (head of the largest indie record store coalition) contained the basic ingredients for what became Record Store Day and are included in the story with his permission.

Just take those new records off the shelf

I'm going for the first time tomorrow and taking my teenage daughter with me to Amoeba in Hollywood. Any thoughts on when we should get there? I was thinking of getting there by 5:30 or 6:00 am? Do you think that is realistic for getting the few things we want?

Not sure how early to go and line up at my local. I was thinking of getting there for opening time but I've just seen early birds will be provided with free drinks and cupcakes from the cupcake shop next door whilst in the queue and I like free stuff and I love cake. So I'm thinking early is a good idea! Cake and vinyl....life doesn't get any better :D

The Placebo release is definitely my most sought after one of the three. Whilst you're right that it was never released on vinyl, it has actually been released on one of their compilation releases on vinyl. Can't remember now which one.

The Elastica LP does come with the catalogue. The only thing I'm not fully into is that it's being reissued by Rough Trade, who didn't release it originally. I'm a bit of a purist in that sense.

    Anyway, if you go, enjoy!

Every year I wonder how many of these early auctions are actually completed and paid for. Monday Cracked Actor will be lucky to be getting MSRP on eBay.
