"Paint It Black" (May 1966) was the first number 1 in both the UK and the US to feature a sitar, and stayed on the singles chart for 11 weeks. From Wikipedia: "[Brian] Jones' sitar playing immediately became influential in developing a whole subgenre of minor-key psychedelic music". Other driving rock records followed which clearly imitated the song, with an eastern melody / sitar-like sound. I have listed some that I can recall; others are more obscure or forgotten. Any additions?

"Don't Worry Mother, Your Son's Heart Is Pure" by the McCoys (September 1966)
"Why Pick on Me" by the Standells (October 1966)
"The People in Me" by the Music Machine (December 1966)
"Aladdin Story" by the Rolling Stones (recorded in 1970, released as "So Divine" in 2010, same riff)
"Your Gold Dress" by the Dukes of Stratosphear (1985)

The mention of "minor key psychedelic music" reminds me of "Venus in Furs".

And was written by teenage Graham Gouldman who also wrote (among many other songs) 'No Milk Today' which has a similar rhythm though no sitar!

Norwegian Wood featured a sitar in 1965. Not that it takes anything away from the greatness of Paint it Black, but The Beatles often set the trend.

The sitars are back in the mix, but they do give it a nice period vibe.

There is an alternate version with sitar but no one would have heard that back in '65 and '66.

This one is in the same vein with a great riff. It's probably my favorite Gouldman tune. The Yardbirds attempted to record it with Mickie Most but it never was completed.

Electric Prunes " I Had too Much to Dream (Last Night)" seems an obvious pick, unless it came out before the Stones song.

This is pretty obvious and not that pertinent, but any excuse to post this :

  19. The guitar on this one does a nice with a 'sitar-like' sound and it drives like Paint it Black.

Indeed - I should have said the version released back then, or the hit version.
