Listened to Steve's gold disc version of Miles Davis Relaxin' last night.
It's amazing. (Do I really have to say "IMO"?)
My wife came downstairs and asked what I was listening to and she listens to...well...not jazz anyway.
Of course I have heard him many times before but usually on Miles or Trane stuff and I looked and sure enough I don't have any of his records.
He reminds me a little of Ahmad Jamal who I really enjoy.
Any recommendations from you jazz cats out there for some Red Garland?

    Thanks!
    Norm

Ahmad's Blues from Davis' Workin' is one of my favorites, it is just the Red Garland Trio stretching out sans Davis.

That whole series, Relaxin, Cookin, Workin, Steamin, was backed by the Trio.

Miles felt the same way. That's why he hired him. :)

I believe Ahmad is still alive. Is he still working?
Thanks for all the help guys. That Red set looks like the ticket!
BTW: Since I mentioned Miles,Trane and Red:
Philly Joe Jones and Paul Chambers ain't too shabby either!

    Peace-

"A Garland of Red" is a classic. And despite the corny title, I've always been fond of "Moodsville Volume 1" with Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, Sam Jones, and Art Taylor. It's a very mellow record, but I think the commercialism of the marketing scheme hides some very beautiful playing.

I like Groovy. Its out as a K2 20-bit remaster and sounds good.
The stock Garland CD's pop up on ebay real cheap - Fantasy remastered most of his catalog in 1995 with good sound. To get better sound you might have to look to the recent remasters from Japan (I have not heard these)

OK, I now see realize that the Prestige 3 CD set is a JVC Japan reissue. Seems like nice stuff, although I am thinking of starting with a single CD compilation like C Jam Blues - The Best Of Red Garland from the same series.
BTW, I have the Swing Journal Readers Request: Riverside Best , which I find excellent. One may object to their mastering approach, but I think JVC CD's are better than regular reissues, and compilations are my weak point anyway. ;)

Ahmed Jamal turned 73 on July 2, and according to allmusic.com is still with us. As far as Red Garland goes, I have ALL NIGHT LONG and SOUL JUNCTION and both are outstanding; Coltrane in true sheets-of-sound on both. Prestige/OJC; I think I got each for $9.99. B&N has for $11.99; CDUniverse for $11.29 or so. Lots of Red in print, happy to say.

Don't want to sound like I'm dropping an easy post on you but I have never bought a Garland title that I didn't like. And I've got 24 of them. The man and his trios are absolutley awesome in any decade.
