    Dear Rega user,

My cartridge is Nagaoka MP500(8g). Turntable is Rega RP6.
My stock Rega counterweight is at an end of RB303 Arm. (PLS See pic.)

    <Questions>

    a: Should I change a heavier counterweight ?
b: When I replace stock with heavier weight. What benefit will I get?
c: Which manufacture do you recommend for heavier weight?
(I would like to use a stock dust cover during playing vinyl. It is desirable for heavier weight not to contact dust cover.)

    Best Regards

I would just get the Rega Heavy Tungsten weight.

I did, and it was a major improvement in bass weight among other things. Read the reviews on it, it is a Stereophile Recommended Component for a reason. Also, when you do change out the weight (or before) disable the tonearm's internal spring-loaded mechanism that Rega uses to fine-tune VTF, bypass it and use a scale and the counterweight: huge improvement just doing that alone.

raferx - will the dust cover still close with that counterweight? It looks really big - I was considering picking it up (my counterweight is at the end of the stub w/ the D20X2L) but I've got a new, curious 2 year old cat in the house now so I'm using my dustcover full time, just in case.

Thanks ALL for quick replies kindly :)

I'm sorry but I forgot that I am using 2mm Rega Sim for adjusting VTA.

I don't know, I've never used a dustcover, and the Rega shipping box (with the unopened dustcover in it) is in storage under speaker, phono stage, etc. boxes.
Sorry. You could email Gregory and find out... [email protected]

Pete Riggle counterweight. A 6.5g cartridge is about as light as I can go on my P7. The counterweight will be resting against the pivot stop.

If you use 2mm shim, you will close the cover with the Rega heavy tungsten. If you ever need more shim, 3.5mm or more, then you will no longer close the cover with it.

I have also got the Groovetracer. It is beautifully machined, will fit on your existing stub and the cover will close no matter how much you shim the arm. You may also reap sonic benefits.

the under-slung Groovetracer counter weight is a thing of beauty. by it and never look back!

Try an aftermarket under-slung counterweight like the several mentioned here (I'm biased towards the F-2), and disable the tonearm's internal spring-loaded mechanism that the 303 uses to fine-tune the VTF (by turning it as far it will go), use a scale and the counterweight.
Then, if you choose, you'll start to understand what that TT is really capable of with some modest tweaks.

Thanks for a lot of replies and kind words.

I intend to parchase either the Rega heavy tungsten counterweight or the Groovetracer counterweight.
And I'll disable the tonearm's internal spring-loaded also.

    Thank you again!

x2—it seems like getting around the screw-in end stub—I believe Origin and Riggle both do this—is a mechanical improvement worth considering as it places the moment of inertia closer to the pivot for even better tracking.
