There seems to be a lot of information(misinformation) regarding ripping SACD's. Is it true the only way is via a jail broken PS3 player? Thx.

Why do you think that what you're reading is misinformation?

  4. The answer is not quite that simple, but one could write a book on SACD ripping. It's the most direct method of obtaining the pure DSD files trapped on SACDs.

ted_b on Computer Audiophile did practically that.

The definitive source. I just don't have the time to do anything about it... And yet I keep buying the darn things :)

to the OP - if you ask the mods to move this thread into the Hardware sub-forum you might get more in the way of technical responses.

As to your original question the answer is yes for those without access to expensive music industry dedicated type hardware.

ted_b is an excellent resource for SACD ripping over at Audio Circle. I'm like you in that I'm still buying SACDs and should make an attempt at ripping them. It will probably be in vain as I'm severely computer challenged . So it probably wouldn't end very well :help:.

If I can do it, anyone should be able to, the folks at Computer Audiophile are friendly & helpful.

I stumbled once or twice but learned a bit in the process.

Ted_B (who responds here as well) makes it pretty easy. A lot of steps, but nothing at all challenging.

I ripped about 400. Exactly one wouldn't rip. On another, I could not extract files after ripping. I can't say I've listened to that many yet, so I can't comment on the existence of other problems.

It does take time. Much longer than ripping a CD.

Gellie - did I see you posting on an Oppo thread at AVSForum?

I have done it with a PS3… it is easier to buy them online from acoustic sounds or HD Tracks

they were never really meant to "backed up"

Well, more and more of them are getting re-released in a downloadable format, but there are still quite a few I own that have not been. Also, when I've paid $25-30 for an AP Blue Note SACD, I'm not terribly enthusiastic about paying another $25 for a downloadable version. If I were starting from scratch . . .

I had a customer "starting from Scratch again" and bought a stack of records to replace all the records they sold when they went CD

Maybe everyone will sell there SACD's for downloads and we can stock up on disc's again?

To be fair, CDs were not meant to be "backed up" either ...

I think the biggest problem is finding a reliable (ie working) PS3 that plays and hasn't had the firmware updates done. I did a search a while back and they were scarce and fairly expensive.

For the moment, I have given up.

That's it exactly in my opinion. I read ted_b's guide and understood it. My issue would be identifying the machine to do the rips.

Playing the "backup" beats the hell out of risking the original in a car!

There is a person on ComputerAudiophile that will repair an older PS 3 for you. Northeast(something or the other). Read his posts and contact him. I did after buying a PS 3 that was supposed to be version 3.55. Northeast(something or the other) took care of that and performed some recommended preventative maintenance.

I ripped 350 SACDs without a hitch and looking to buy more.

I went to ps3specialist (via eBay). He sells them for about $400 and repairs them for $100 plus shipping. He offers a 1 year warranty. I have 400 SACDs (average price $15-$20 - if they could be replaced). It seemed like a reasonable investment.

Not to mention the convenience of being to access my DSD files from my Oppo 105.

I don't think Northeastohiopcs and ps3specialist are the same person. My wife tells me to always get a second opinion or quote. It is good advice that I have learned to follow. :D

    YMMV
