Here's some songs with subject matter that kind of fits...
Tom Petty- Runnin down a dream
    Willie Nelson-On the road again
    Deep Purple- Highway Star
    Led Zeppelin-Kashmir
    The Who-Going Mobile
    The Beatles-Two of us
    Bruce Springsteen- Promised Land
Judas Priest- Heading out to the highway

I'm not a huge lover of road trips....or flying

I suppose it may be a receiver with a (1/8 ") line input to allow for a portable cassette tape player? :) That or it's time for a trade-in. :D

Overnight driving is when I end up listening to fusion jazz.
Speedy heavy metal always goes good with daytime road trips.

    Some great “road” songs:

“Route 66” - I prefer Nat King Cole for a classic version and Depeche Mode for a modern version.
    “America” - Simon & Garfunkel
“Road Runner” - The Modern Lovers
“Take it Easy” - The Eagles
    “Ol 55” - The Eagles
“Life is a Highway” - Tom Cochrane or Rascal Flatts version
“CB Song” - Legendary Shack Shakers
“Long White Cadillac” - The Blasters
    “Helen Wheels” - Paul McCartney
    “Little Red Corvette” - Prince
    “The Passenger” - Iggy Pop
    “Maybelline” - Chuck Berry
“I’ve Been Everywhere” - Johnny Cash
    “Promised Land” - Elvis Presley
    “Radar Love” - Golden Earing
    “Ventura Highway” - America
“Born to be Wild” - Steppenwolf
    “Rockaway Beach” - The Ramones
“Road to Nowhere” - Talking Heads
“Brand New Cadillac” - The Clash

A semi-obscure band that creates fantastic post-rock/ambient music, ideal for driving: Hammock.

Aw geez, I LOVE Hammock! Thanks for the reminder!
I suggest these three from Koop: "Summer Sun", "Come To Me", & "I See A Different You"...zippy, sugar-pop lounge jazz, with riffs and grooves sampled from various space-age bachelor pad LP collections!
Deodato's "Rhapsody In Blue", and the live version (to be quadraiffically re-released by Dutton-Vocalion this month) of "Do It Again"
What the heck, Patrick Williams' "concerto for cop shows", the album Threshold has some toe-tappin' big-ass band tracks that'll get you groovin' down the road!
And, since you can't drive to Ibiza from here, grab the Weekend Players album Pursuit of Happiness - don't forget your don't-get-it-wet swimsuit, and grab that strappy black number for the Casino.

BTW, those of you with USB sticks will get frustrated with your always-predictable/always-alphabetical song selection, after the first few plays. Elsewhere on this board, there's a thread about freeware programs you reside on your flash stick, which turns your selections into random playlists, just by inserting a random sequence of numbers in front of whichever tag field you assign it to (your Aerosmith becomes "03547Aerosmith", etc). And many of these programs can re-order the random numbers, so you can scramble them all for the next road trip! Look for that thread!

Well, I wouldn’t just recommend the Dead for anyone traveling, but I will agree that on the road I like some longer, meandering tunes to follow over the miles

Yo LaTengo - Pass the Hatchet, I’m Goodkind; The Story of ...
    Wilco - Spiders
Sonic Youth - Rain on Tin, Disconnection Notice, Stones, Dripping Dream, Sympathy for the Strawberry, Hits of Sunshine
The Decemberists - The Tain, The Hazards of Love

Robert Plant's "Big Log" and his cover of Dylan's "One More Cup of Coffee" would fit in here!

Wasn’t that what the Terminator was driving in T2 when they’re about to be slammed by the 18-wheeler? “Step on it!” “This is the vehicle’s top speed.”

  20. It could've been an S-10, i'm not sure. It's been awhile since I last saw Terminator 2.

Used to take endless road trips. Huge quantities of Pat Metheny added texture and life to the landscape.

I prefer to make mixtapes for my roadtrips, but these albums invariably make it into the mix:

    Bananarama - Deep Sea Skiving
    The Bangles - Greatest Hits
    NWA - Straight Outta Compton
    Pet Shop Boys - Actually
The Rolling Stones - December's Children

Just took a road trip last month. Brought along a bunch of music, but the best for blasting down the highway were McCartney's "Run Devil Run" and John Prine's "Tree of Forgiveness."
