I think all the Universal TV shows had to be remastered because all the HD master tapes and the HD backup tapes were destroyed in the June 2008 studio fire. My memory is that they collected about $100 million on the insurance, so in effect, they made a profit on the fire. There were some important prints lost in the fire, and they tend not to talk too much about all the master audio tapes that went up in smoke.

Do you think they still made a profit long term? Seems like it could be a lot of potential dollars up in smoke?

But they had backup safety copies of everything, right? I mean they had to...

No, the backups were kept in the same storage warehouse, so it all burned up. Now, they keep everything as data on three servers: one in Los Angeles, one in Europe, and one in Asia. They have a huge international backup plan.

Ironically, less than two months after the Universal fire in the summer of 2008, all the big studios had a very quiet conference where they discussed backup strategies, because everybody was really rattled by the fire. The biggest issue Universal had was that the fire melted about $50 million' worth of mastering work. The value of the blank tape was one thing, but the work done was many, many times more money. Some of those projects took 6 months of labor to do.

They put all their eggs in one basket? Wow! That was incredibly stupid of them.

I noticed that in the past month or so ME TV is making old shows 16:9 by enlarging and cutting off the top and bottom with black pillars on the sides.

I had a conversation with a high-ranking Universal exec about that, after the disaster happened. There were several people who got their heads cut off for that. The good news is: Universal's mastering facility didn't make that decision, so they were spared; it was studio management people who were responsible for storing the work once it was done.

The real stupid thing to me was hanging on to digital tapes instead of hard drives with data.

How is Night Court on LAFF? Is that show any good? Are there any pitches or speeding? Like, is the show sped up for instance?

How are the commercials by the way?

Did something happen to LAFF's schedule recently or something? Seems like something got flipped flopped or removed.

Were the opening credits of Roseanne shot on film? It always looked like it to me. That would be weird if the entire show looked that way.

Looks like film to me. I'm watching the Roseanne 10 fan favorites DVD. Mill Creek did a good job on this.

Where is the contact information for LAFF? Because I've had enough of them and their schedule.

Except that they overlap (and squeeze) the end credits of one show with the opening of the next one.

GetTV runs old sitcoms in the morning in their original format, with no or at least minimal editing, which leads to 35-to-40-minute(!) time slots. Quality is all over the place depending on the source material. Their hour dramas and half-hour prime time sitcoms are edited to fit in a normal time slot.
