So Rush is getting the SACD treatment according to Highfidelityreview.com. Due out on October 31 are:
Rush - 2112 (5.1 Surround Sound Version) (Universal Chronicles)

Rush - All The World's A Stage (Universal Chronicles)

Rush - Caress Of Steel (Universal Chronicles)

Rush - Fly By Night (Universal Chronicles)

Personally, I hope 2112 sounds amazing. Universal has done a good job when they've invested in SACD. The stereo Police ones, and to a large degree, the Gabriel ones (altho that was artist choice) sans Up, suffer since they don't sound THAT much better (if at all) from the newer remasters. Interesting that they're totally skipping the debut album, and it sucks that only 2112 is 5.1.

I hope they do all albums post-2112 in surround (studio at least), but my guess is that only 2112 and Moving Pictures will get the top-of-the-line treatment, and maybe a best-of (like the Police hits).

I can just hear the beginning of 2112 in surround now :D

2112 would be first choice as well. Kind of a shame they just don't issue the whole Rush catalogue in 5:1 IMHO.

Well, I can see why albums like "Fly By NIght" aren't done ... they're not as sonically interesting. WHat DOES surprise me is that the debut album isn't in this first batch, even just as a stereo SACD.

2112 and later lend themselves to 5.1; I can imagine songs like "Hemispheres" being great in surround. Or "La Villa". Uni could even do some of them as 2:1, considering those albums are like 35 mins long (Farewell/Hemi/Permanent).

I don't know, I think it would be kind of interesting to hear what they could do with Fly By Night in 5:1 just for the hope that they might be able to improve it.

Would you get into surround sound if that were done?

What??? By-Tor and the Snow Dog would be GREAT in 5.1!

Frankly, owning the Rush library on disc already (and previously LP, and tape…) if they don’t issue them in 5.1 I probably won’t by them yet again. If Moving Pictures is not in 5.1, if and when they get around to it, I’ll cry (buy still won’t buy it)

I would hope that Vapor Trails would also be converted someday.....as my CD is unlistenable.....(is that a word? :D)

Vapor Trails (long threads on the Rush boards) was mixed WAY loud. And since it's Warners, if anything, it'd get the DVD-A treatment. But I'm up for it :)

I agree that the song By-Tor would be awesome in 5.1, but as a whole, the band was still finding their proverbial way and a song like FBN wouldn't lend itself as well as a By-Tor. Altho other than 2112, other songs on that album are a bit more straightforward.

As I said, I think it's like the Police CDs. Risk it with the biggies or the hits, and do stereo for the majority of the back catalog. I agree that all of 'em in 5.1 would be the best situation of course.

Honestly, I'm surprised that Uni/A&M didn't do at least Synchronicity in 5.1. That album lends itself to the format.

Ah well, I'll take any Rush in 5.1, I just think that beyond 2112 and MP, it's going to be questionable.

Does anyone have an update on Rush SACDs?

I'm not sure this really surprises me. Why would you draw away sales of your newest product (a new live DVD and CD coming out on Oct 21)? I doubt if you'll see these SACD's this year.

Wasn't the Rush in Rio DVD originally supposed to come out in July?

I will have to stick with the MOFIs and remastered RedBooks until they release them on DVD-A.

Unfortunately I do not have a universal player so the SACDs are out. I hope Universal releases the Rush albums as DVD-As at some point.

...One of my favorite groups in a format I cannot use. :( ...poor me right?

I'm too... I will not jump into surround, so it doesn't bother me very much.

Gamma, with some of the product coming out these days, the MOFI's may still remain the best versions available!

Right... the Mofi sound very good! I also like the Mercury remasters, but I always ask myself: Where is the bass going, Bob?

Gary, righto. The MOFIs are clearly the smoothest best sounding Rush on CD. However, the new remasters ARE tonally correct IMO. If you can afford the MOFIs, by all means go that route, but the remasters are fine if you can't.

Claus, intersting point. The original release of Show Of Hands had great bass...but on the remaster something seems missing...although not bad, I believe that this remaster could be too detailed. I'm not sure what happend in the remastering process, but overall Ludwig did a fine job.

Geoff, it's more of an expenditure thing as opposed to desire at this point. Yes, one day I would like to be able to afford to get into a really good surround system, but until then I'm quite happy in 2 channel. ;)

I agree that the MFSL's are the best sounding versions of said Rush albums, but I'm definitely not in the camp of the remasters. IMHO they aren't that good. Way too bright (10-13K range) and totally lacking in bass on a majority of the albums.

I use the MoFi MP when auditioning stereo equipment including speakers. Great demo disc.

And wouldn't you agree Dave, that they also lack midrange? I compared Analog Kid on both Retrospective II and the MOFI Signals. I definitely hear a difference.
