Sad Sad News...Art Carney Has Died

Rest in peace, Art Carney.

The man who will forever be remembered as Ralph Cramden's sidekick, Ed Norton, has died at 85.

 

Just heard this over the radio, no info was given!

 

Now Norton can join Ralph Kramden in that apartment building in the sky....

Actor Art Carney dies at 85

Actor Art Carney, who made his name as Jackie Gleason's "Honeymooners" sidekick Ed Norton and later won an Oscar for the movie "Harry & Tonto," died at his Westbrook, Conn., home on Nov. 9. He was 85.

Carney was retired and died after a long illness, the Swan Funeral Homes announced in a statement this afternoon.

Carney was Gleason's most well-known set-up man, and he often had the audience for the black-and-white television classic laughing as heartily as the main comedian himself.

His characteristic garb -- a T-shirt with its sleeves rolled up, a dark vest and a misshapen hat with an upturned brim -- was enough in itself to elicit laughs and became his personal comedy trademark.

Carney won an Emmy for an outstanding humor program and four individual achievement Emmys in connection with the show

Carney was born in Mt. Vernon, N.Y., on Nov. 4, 1918, and moved to Westbrook in 1957. He was an Army veteran.

He leaves his wife and high school sweetheart, Jean Myers Carney, and two sons and a daughter. He was buried at Riverside Cemetery in Old Saybrook.

He was one of the all time greats and a great human being to boot. I will miss him.

 

Norton was my favorite Honeymooners character. Rest In Peace, Art Carney.

One of the absolute comic geniuses of our time, possibly even funnier than Gleason. He will be missed.

I'd suggest a funeral dirge, but it'd probably just turn into "Swanee River" before we finished.

 

The first thing I thought of....
The Funny thing is is that I just pick up the Honeymooners set at Costco on Sunday and started watching it.... the day he passed.

Heh... I wish I had a copy of "Swanee River" to play in his honor. The Honeymooners is my favorite TV show ever. That episode where we find out Ed Norton composed "Swanee River" ($99,000 Answer) is IMO the finest moment in the history of television.

Very sad news. I remember when TV Guide once did that list of the best TV characters of all time, I was pretty mad that they passed over Ed Norton for the #1 spot (he was #2 on the list). Rest in peace Art - thanks for everything.

Honeymooners was and still is classic comedy at it's finest. I also really liked the "Harry & Tonto" film . Art was a great actor/comedian and will be missed by all. RIP Mr. Carney !

 

He's immortal, living on forever in those brilliant early TV shows.

Read about it in the paper today. It's funny, I have been watching the Honeymooners DVD all weekend and I was thinking about Art too. I thought he was still alive, but I couldnt remember for sure. Kinda weird that he might have been alive the first time I thought about it and dead the next. I was doing my Ed Norton impression all weekend anyway, but now I have reason for it.
Does anyone know what episode they were talking about in USA Today where Ed spends 2 minutes peeling an orange because Ralph forgot to make his entrance?

 

Hey, Art lived to 85 years of age...not a bad achivement. The mark of a truly great actor is one that can play a character that is the diametric opposite of his own personality(as Norton was to Art Carney). The Laurel & Hardy of television, Gleason and Carney were a truly great team. His performance in "Harry & Tonto" was also worthy of the Academy Award he received for it. We are all better for his having been here, and in a sense, he will live forever. RIP.

I'm reminded of the early 1990s Calgary punk rock band "Grandpa's Magic Pinecone" named after that Art Carney Christmas Coke commercial. When I found out where how the band got their name, I laughed out loud for about 10 minutes straight.

I think they're going to be showing all of the "Classic 39" episodes of The Honeymooners on TV Land starting tonight at 8pm Eastern time.

 

He was also terrific in The Late Show with Lily Tomlin.

 

Not to mention he originated the Felix Unger character in The Odd Couple on Broadway. Obviously, I never saw this, but in my mind the casting is nothing short of perfect.

Absolutely...great movie and a great performance of someone who was acting there age so to speak. So many wonderful things in that movie.
