Yes. My wife and I were impressed at how well the B-52s were mixed in the 1990 episode. The drums especially had a pleasing "openness."

The next two live shows will be...

10/25: Jim Carrey / Iggy Azalea
    11/1: Chris Rock / Prince

Chris Rock/Prince sounds like a winner.

Also, how can they justify "Bill Hader's had the lowest ratings EVER" when most of the 1980-81 season was in a total ratings freefall? They said that from the Malcolm McDowell episode onward, every episode showed a significant slump that probably didn't reverse until Eddie Murphy made it big a year or so later.

Who cares? If ever there was a show immune from ratings concerns it should be SNL. What exactly is trying to take their spot? As long as it registers something it should stay on the air. And the star power of the next two episodes should give it a bump.

I don't have the numbers so I can't say if the Hader episode was truly lower than the 1980-1981 season, but if it turns out to be true it is most likely because the 1980-1981 season was broadcast during a 3 major network world rather than the multi-specialty channel (plus internet) universe we live in today.

Can we just place ALL the blame onto Kenan Thompson and move on? :p

The 1980-1981 season was a time when networks still got big ratings on Saturday night. ABC had big hits with The Love Boat and Fantasy Island.

Now they mostly fill Saturday primetime with reruns. The "lowest rated SNL ever" was also the highest rated show of the night.

  12. I thought DVR views over the next couple of days were supposed to be factored into the ratings these days, though. I imagine a lot of the Bill Hader audience watched it later and were out clubbing with Dan Cortese when the show was actually being broadcast.

No, it's still a winner especially compared to the star power of the season so far. I have not seen much of Chris Rock the last few years so I look forward to it.

Well, I thought the first episode this season was jaw droppingly horrible, but I have to say they have improved greatly. I look forward to Jim Carrey! Even the skits I don't "get" are, admittedly, done with some thought behind them...they don't feel like filler.

Bill Hader is a major talent. I look forward to his writing and future projects. I appreciate his love of film and how he is introducing classic films to kids via TCM. He really cracks me up every time he does Herb Welch.

Yes. And since Kristen was there the only thing missing I wanted to see was "Secret Word". Maybe the Jan Hooks tribute replaced it?

I'm beginning to wonder if there will ever be another good musical guest on this show ever again?

Here's a cool blog post on the making of this season's opening and bumpers. There's also a cool video of the title sequence at the end with applause cut out and, possibly, a studio recording of the theme. Hammond's voice over from the premiere is still there, though, so maybe the soundtrack is from that night and they just edited out applause.
